New grad BSN moving to Honolulu

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

Hello all,

I just found out my husband (who is military) is getting assigned to Hickam this summer and I will move out there once I graduate from my BSN program in May 2015.

What are the job prospects for new grads out there? I recognize I'll need to be open to any unit, although my interest is L&D and peds. I'm worried about being able to find a job out there after reading some threads in this forum.

Any input/tips/suggestions are appreciated. I'm considering waiting to take my NCLEX until I get to Hawaii, so I can avoid applying for reciprocity etc.

Thank y'all for your time!

If you dont mind me asking when you applied to musc did you have all your pre reqs complete? Gpa? How much work experience have you had?

Hi there, im really desperate to get into the new graduate nurse program. Im willing to get into nurse aide or tech whatever is a stepping stone to get hired as a nurse here in the island. I dont wanna move out of the island since i have my family here. But would you help me get into the new grad program of queens? With some questions in my mind. Your help is greatly appreciated. Are they still doing it this year?

Im still working to get a license, maybe by december i'll take the nclex exam. But can i start working as new grad or nurse aide as stepping stone to working in queens or any other hospitals?

Hope to hear anything from you guys. Thanks 😊

That's disappointing to hear, eukaryote :(

It's a mixed bag of advice I've been getting. Some nurses here tell me give it a year and work as a CNA in the meantime. Others say move to the mainland. Not sure what the best course of action is other than just to take it a day at a time and just try. The job I'm holding out for in California will take me a year to get hired into so I'm just gonna stay put in Hawaii and see what happens in the meantime. I'm just seriously so over California, I need a mental health year in Hawaii if that's all it turns out to be. I know that's not an option for a lot of people but it's something I just have to do.

How did everything turn out?

I made it in Hawaii a little over a year working as an RN in outpatient making squat. But yep, it's true what they all said. Difficult to get inpatient job as a new grad, regardless of degree. Like many other new grad locals and ex-mainlanders, I decided to go mainland for any real job prospects. Still, I don't regret it. And maybe one day when I get more experience I can make it back to Hawaii nei, because that's where my heart really is. Until then, aloha.
