New grad BSN looking for work!

Published

Hey, I am a soon-to-be new grad BSN from UNC in May and I am moving to the New Haven area (husband starting grad school) in May. I have applied EVERYWHERE to so many postings and I have been rejected from all of them. I have found few new grad programs and I am starting to feel the panic as even those applications have not yielded me so much as an interview.

Does anyone have any advice regarding a job search for a new BSN up there?

Thanks in advance!

Once you take/pass the NCLEX-RN, you will have a more competitive application. Are you limiting yourself to hospital positions?

In my experience employers want to see that you've graduated before considering you. You don't have to pass NCLEX prior to being hired. In your case they might also not be responding because you are not local. Once you at least graduate, better yet have a local a dress, I am sure you will start hearing back.

Good luck!

Yale new haven hospital has a new grad training program starting in July. They just posted a few days ago. You need a good, well organized resume. Good luck !

I am hoping to start out in a hospital. If I had my choice I would start in an ICU or ED setting.

Things definitely run a little differently up there, most of my classmates applying for jobs here in NC applied between December and February and already have job offers contingent on their passing the NCLEX-RN. There do not seem to be as many new grad programs, and everyone wants experience.

I applied to both their medsurg and ICU/ED new grad programs and was rejected. The peri-operative listing is open now, and while I would be happy to get a job, that is not my interest at this point. Who am I kidding though, its not like I'm getting any other job offers.

I am a former Army Officer, have plenty of experience outside of the medical field, but my nursing-specific resume is not terribly strong. Outside of being a great student in nursing school, I have nothing else to beef it up. So frustrated.

Are you looking just for grad residencies or are you applying for whatever open positions you might find? There are some hospitals like Yale that specifically do grad residencies, and others that just quietly hire new grads and orient them. For example, I know St. Mary's in Waterbury hires new grads, and a quick look shows they have two ER Nursing positions posted within the past couple of days. The listing says graduation from accredited nursing school and current CT RN license required, but I know two classmates who got jobs offers prior to passing NCLEX. As long as it doesn't REQUIRE experience (as I recall when I was looking, Yale sometimes had that part in red letters for some of their positions), you should go ahead and apply for postings that say they prefer experience.
