Hello everyone. I graduated last May of 2013 and I have been looking for jobs like crazy. It's been so difficult to get into the hospitals. I passed out hundreds of applications through out these months and so far the only job offer that I received was for an adult day care health center. I accepted the offer since it's definitely better than no job. But I've heard about the stories where nurses were not able to find an RN position in the hospital because a lot won't count these as experience. I do believe that many of these positions still hold the basic nursing foundations such as assessments, med pass, education, etc. as well as other useful skills such as time-management, organizational skills, prioritization, delegation, etc. These are all qualities that can be justified during the interview to convince the hiring managers that you are still capable of the open position on their unit. That being said, I'm just worried that the people looking through my resume won't even take a chance at an interview because it's not "acute-care" experience. I will be interviewing for a new grad rn residency program next week and would definitely take that opportunity even though it's an hour away. But if I don't get the position, I'd stay with the adult day care. Are there any nurses out there that had experience in such settings and landed a hospital position? If so, did you find it difficult to find and how long did it take? I really appreciate any feedback.

I am in the same boat as you, graduated in April, passed boards in June, and have been working in LTC/rehab. I have gone on a bunch of hospital interviews and the managers will ask about my current work and agree it's better to work As a Nurse than not to, but the experience doesn't relate or give you an advantage to acute care work in the hospital. This hospital job hunt is really hard and stressful, but I'm going to keep applying and interviewing and eventually something has to happen. Just keep your head up and know that you aren't the only one in this situation! Good luck!
