Hey everyone! There is a local school that offers the LPN program. I am very interested in starting, but do all LPN's have to take the nurse's entrance exam before even applying to the program? Also, how long does the program usually take in other schools?

I am just starting as well. At my school, you do not have to take the nurses entrance exam before you can apply, but you do have to take it to be accepted. In fact you can actually wait to take it untill after you have taken your Pre-reqs. Also .. here you can take it as many times as needed.

Our program had a pre-entrance exam that was not focused solely on nursing. It was comprehensive and revolved around mathematics, spelling, reading comprehension, and basic science. There are pre entrance exam study guides. I used Barrons and found it to be immensely helpful. The first step for admittance to our program was having one of the 34 highest scores on this test. Those people were then invited to interview. After that it was a physical, and making sure all your vaccinations were up-to-date. The test at that time could be taken up to 3 times before the start of the next class. They have since reduced it to 2x. This is 2x per year when it is offered. So if you really wanted to be in the program you could take it 2x a year forever or until you were accepted. The year I went to school, 185 people tested, I heard last year it was closer to 250. This year several of the CNA's I work with are taking the test. I want all of them to pass!!!!! They would be awesome nurses.
Almost forgot, our program was 11 mos from July of one year till June of the next. 5 days a week. Usually 3 days in clinicals and 2 in the classroom. Awesome instructors. We became a family, highly dysfunctional but a family none the less.
Good Luck

The LPN program that I start in Sept is 10 mths full time OR 2 yrs part time.
There is a nursing entrance test you need to pass before they will even give you the application. It consists of basic math (fractions, decimals, %'s) reading comprehension and sentence structure. I didn't study ahead of time but I'm told a good GED book will have the same types of questions.

Hey Tres, thanx so much for your reply.. it's good to know that i need to basically study my behind off to get a top score! I was sure i needed a top score, but your example just made it clearer! About the study guide (156pgs) for the nurse entrance exam, i ordered that yesterday from ERIworld.com.. I was told by the vo-tech school (i hope to get into) to go to that site and order the study guide. I was wondering how your interview went? What type of things do they ask, etc.? The program i am interested in is 15 months long from Sept of one year to Jan. of the next yr. and the exam is offered 4 times a year.. thanx again for your help!

Hi Tina...I begin my LPN program this coming Monday (3/14). We had to take the NET (reading, math, no nursing) after we applied. It was required as part of the application process although passing it did NOT guarantee that you would be admitted. There were several people that showed up on my test date to take the test and there were at least 5 different test dates for this March class. I went to Orientation 2 weeks ago and there are only 30 people in my class (the part-time evening program=18 months). Entrance into LPN programs in my area (NYC) are extremely competitive...so much so that I'll be travelling an hoour each way to mine. In any event, I wish you luck. I know you'll do well.
thank you all for your replies! i am looking for all info possible! well i am still waiting for my ERI study guide to come in the mail so that i can begin studing for my nurse entrance exam... from what everyone seems to be saying, it shouldn't be THAT terrible! getting INTO the program is what i fear most, however..

Hey,
I had to take two test to get in to my school, the I can't remember the name test which had reading, math and the usual and you had to get a certain score on that, then you had to take the NET which I thought was a very strange test some of the questions on that test were silly and weird I just thought it was a strange test strange or not I past started school 3/03 graduate 4/04 my program was a little over a year, had personal drama so I waited to take the nclex but I took it and past. Im now working on my RN with excelsior and enjoying a lucrative career as an LPN.

Hello, I'm from Texas. The program that I am in is 12 months long. I had to take 2 tests to enter the program. The 1st test is only given to you once and you must pass it. If you pass that test, then you are given the NET, which you must also pass. I passed both test on the 1st try. I felt kinda bad, because the people in my class were all on the waiting list for at least 6 months or more, and I got in 3 weeks before the course started because of my high test scores. It's great, I think that you'll love it.
