New director is saying we don't get paid for taking "required classes" at the assisted living facility?

Published

I work at an assisted living facility. In the past, we were always paid for taking these required classes that the assisted living facility said we had to do. However, now we have a new Executive Director. This new one says we have to do all of these required classes. However, she said NO. We will not be getting paid for taking these "required classes". So how is it at your facility? If you take their required classes do you get paid or not? Thanks.

Request to take the class during work time. This way you get paid off of being at work and doing the required classes. Your facility insist on you taking. When you're off the clock from the job, you're off the clock.

From what I have been hearing from friends and colleagues that this seems to be a new trend!  Also taking indirect time from people that do audits, attend council meetings. I know my last job that if you asked to complete required modules not during your shift, it HAD to be during like 9-5, no hours that had shift differential times, like weekends.  That's getting really petty. I am one of those people that cannot concentrate on a module while I am working. Insanity.

As education is a WORK REQUIREMENT, need to get paid for all hours worked when hourly employee in most states.  Contact your local Wage and Hour office to confirm and file a complaint if not paid.

🙂

Agree 100%! This is a wage and hour issue, not a "how can the nurse manager save a little money issue"!  Report this to your local Wage and Hour Division  before they get rid of the whole Federal Department of Labor!

As others have said, if required by your job you must be legally compenstated, if they aren't going to pay you, politely refuse the training and give them a copy of the law. They are just being cheap.
