New book regarding addiction in nurses

A new book was published today called "From Unbecoming a Nurse to Overcoming Addiction." Stories from 29 nurses who had to deal with this lousy disease...some who succumbed and some who triumphed. A must read as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I think it should be mandatory reading for all nurses and in all training programs!

Thanks, Jack! I just ordered it and look forward to reading it. The last book you recommended (can't think of it off the top of my head) was wonderful and really hit home. It was as if she was writing from my own thoughts and feelings. So I'm sure I will learn a lot from this one and enjoy reading it as well. I am also making copies of information from the website and passing it along to the faciliator of my nurse support group. She recommended the other book to the rest of her groups, too :) Thanks for the heads up.....anything I can read that will not only help my own recovery but understand what others go through is a  in my book

I know several of the people in the book and know of there recovery efforts personally. I had no idea they were going to be in the book, so it was quite a surprise as I read the stories. It made their stories...and their efforts...even more meaningful for me.

It definitely puts a new face on this disease. It should be mandatory reading in all nursing programs, including advanced practice programs AND boards of nursing!

I look forward to your impressions.

The facilitator for my nurse support group was quite happy to get the information on the book, as well as the study done by the author on the risk assessment tool (SHUNT) for nursing students. She's got a few nursing students who are looking for projects and is going to pass along that information. I have talked about your and your website quite a bit in my group and the knowledge base you seem to have. What impresses me most about you is that you present not only your feelings and opinions on the subject, but you back it up with evidence based practice. You always have the research and studies to support your posts, which I fully appreciate and use to expand my knowledge. I then bring to my group in an effort to help educate my colleagues who are all walking the same path. Thank again for all the wisdom you impart on this board....it is greatly appreciated!

Thank you, I appreciate that more than you know. It can get pretty frustrating fighting this fight sometimes. The amount of ignorance in our profession regarding this disease is amazing. No one really gives a rat's patute until it happens to them or someone they love. It's pretty disgusting to see the amount of willful ignorance in the nursing profession. Trying to change that is like pounding your head against a brick wall at times. :banghead:

The question remains. Jack, when will you be writing your book?

I'm writing it as we "speak". (Now I remember how much I disliked writing in high school and college!) :smackingf

yayy!! concentrate! shhh! be quiet and listen to your brain.

Count me in the group that are "willfully ignorant and don't give a rat's patute." Why is it that those of us who are not addicted and/or recovering should have all this "mandatory" reading and education? Simply put, many of us have had enough of addicts behaving badly, and now we just don't give a damn. P.S. This post should be mandatory reading, because I feel that you are the ones that just don't get it.

Yeahhh.. okay. I want to opt out of the mandatory education on the endocrine system. Can you write my name so that I will get credit and so the company will have documentation that I know all about the disease processes that go along with it? Thanks! That was so easy!

If you "don't give a damn" why are you here reading these posts and bothering to make comments..HMMMM?

Makes one wonder what's behind all the anger and so-called "not giving a damn."
