Nevada has DOUBLED the minimum random tests per month to 2 and now they are also "witness" tests where they watch you urinate. These tests costs $90 instead of the normal $50. So we are now paying minimum $180 a month instead of $50 just for testing
Is your state this bad? Please discuss
NJ is a min of 25x per year. I guess in NJ it's customary for participants to get their peth/blood test after the holidays so that is around $180. Testing uses Quest out here and the first one I was selected for cost $53. Mine was not observed but there was a warning that some might be observed.
Just because you hate AA does not make it 'voodoo'. It works great for those who want it.
I do not have a dislike of AA itself so much as I do of the fact that programs utilize the 12 step thing as a twisted means of beating thier version of recovery into people. The boilerplate way that my state is run has resulted in 12 step lingo being shoved at me like a ton of bricks. AA, etc. like recovery in general as you say, works great for those who want it. I think what sours people in these programs on the 12 step stuff is the fact that most (definitely mine) programs are so steeped in it to the exclusion of anything science or research based. These programs force attendance at meetings wether appropriate or not.
Regardless of my personal feelings about 12 step philosophy, forcing someone to be there (be it through the courts or these programs) is both useless for the person and insulting to the folks who are there because they want to be.
It is the definition of voodoo. It was invented by some guy with a "vision" not by using any sort of scientific method or scrutiny. I'm sure that the actual voodoo works (or seems to) for some believers but I ain't one for either flavor listed above.
That being said. I like most people in AA and they give me sugary treats and hot coffee when I go to my mandatory meetings. People are entitled to have faith in anything Jesus, dead chickens or some guy with a vision. Its their opinion & nothing more. I'm entitled to my opinion of believing in none of it. I have to attend these dumb meetings but honestly I feel like a confirmed atheist at a born again rally and don't believe in any of it.

sounds like (until now) Nevada was actually a "lenient" state compared to what everyone else has posted.
I really like my nursing group we are forced to attend. even though its $20 a week it's actually good for networking and you can learn a lot from the veterans.
AA is not for me, I'm not an alcoholic. I was forced to attend monthly therapy (out of pocket $) that was ok, really just another cost.
