Neuro Telemetry Unit Advice

Nursing Students Technicians

Published

Hello everyone! I recently got a call to interview for a PCT job on a neuro telemetry floor. This is my first patient care tech interview so I am a it nervous. The only patient experience I have is from my first semester of nursing school. Can anybody give me advice on what to expect in this interview? What is the Neuro Telemetry floor like? I have looked up basic things on the internet but I would like to hear from experienced PCTs. Thanks in advance.

You can expect this to be a very busy floor. Neuro tele has patients who have conditions such as strokes, seizure disorders, head injuries, Parkinsonian disorders, headaches, drug overdoses and the like.

You will do a lot of assisting patients with ADLs, such as feeding, bathing and getting out of bed. You will have to assist with a great deal of toileting, often with people who are a very high fall risk due to unsteady gait, tremors or loss of function of parts of, or even entire sides of the body. There will be dealings with very anxious families who may or may not be coping with the situation well. Your nurses will absolutely rely on you to energetically participate in caring for your patients.

In the interview they are going to want to know if you are reliable, personable, able to move past gossip and negativity from others and what your overall goals are. They may wish to know how you would handle an angry or violent patient or an upset family member. They will be judging you on likability and whether you seem to want the job. They will want to know if you have good time management skills and can work well in a high stress situation.

Good luck!
