Nervous about starting nursing school

I'm about to apply to nursing school at Texas State. My background with college and school is that I have an AS in Studio Art. I have absolutely no health training at all. I've been working as an esthetician. I'm scared to death of how hard it will be to learn everything just to get in. Not to mention that I'm a little older at 46 and my memory isn't what it used to be. Do you think I'm biting off more than I can chew? I'm doing some practice quizzes and it's taking a long time to memorize the information. What do you guys think? Is this doable for someone in my situation?

You got this! Nursing students aren't all 18 year olds straight from high school! There are a lot of non-traditional students. Age is not a factor. Lifestyle is. Make sure you're prepared and aren't working too much. Make sure you plan ahead and are willing to make sacrifices if need be. It's definitely doable, but don't expect it to be easy. It is far from easy for most.

To add to that. Study in your classes so you know the information and understand it well! You will have to apply it, whether that be in another nursing course , the NCLEX, or when you graduate

It just seems like the sheer amount of information is completely overwhelming at best. How do you remember all that information?

Study in many different ways. In my class right now, what I found works for me is that I will read/skim(depending on how much content) my chapters, then go through and skim abd write notes on important topics, i do a study guide (written for my book) for the chapters I am focusing on, i make flashcards on any terms I need to know (on an app), there are lecture videos at my school that I will watch, maybe twice.

Review and review again. Don't cram everything together, spread it out over time. Take breaks when studying if you feel you're not absorbing any information.

The great thing about nursing is that the backgrounds vary. The difference between those that succeed and those that don't is the level of work and commitment that is put forth REGARDLESS of age. You will have to work harder just based off of the fact that you've been out of school for a bit but it is obtainable. There are many resources online so use whatever you can get your hands on. Welcome to nursing it's a great career!!

Age is just a number! My cohorts were all different ages and yes, even older than you are. They did just fine. The best thing is to find out what kind of learner you are (auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or read/write) and go from there. You will find a way to best learn and retain information. It is also good to remember that there is so much information that it isn't possible to know it all. =)

Remember you just have to remember the information to pass the test. í ½í¸‚. Honestly it does seem overwhelming. And honestly studies show the best and brightest students forget much of what was in a lecture or test.

Once you start clinicals or working what you need to remember, what drugs or illness or symptoms you deal with on a regular basis will come easy. And you will know where to find accurate evidenced based information on what you need to review.

Your about the age I was when I started. Actually I was 50 when I graduated. I don't subscribe or give in to the notion that bc I'm older I can't perform as well mentally. I did have to work harder than some of the younger ones but passed nursing school with flying colors.
