Just need a quick answer, and for once Google is no help. I need to know the brand name of sucrose used as an analgesic for infants. My assignment sheet says "Neosweet", but Davis is no help and an internet search gives results for an artificial sweetener. If anyone can give me a correct name to research, I'd really appreciate it.

why can't you just call it "oral sucrose (multiple)" and leave it at that?
i just googled "oral sucrose neonate pain" and got a lot of studies, but a quick perusal of them revealed no trade names.
call a pharmacist, they know everything about meds.
Thank you for the suggestion, and taking a moment to answer. I am making drug cards and need all the "extra" info that goes with these things, so I'm not sure a minimalist approach will be acceptable. I'll try the drugstore tomorrow.

Try a hospital pharmacist. Unless your local pharmacist worked previously in a hospital they likely have no answer.
But I'm bored and I did find this: http://www.natus.com/documents/003416 Rev_A -TS FAQs.pdf Perhaps this could be a starting point for you.
Here's another link: http://www.natus.com/index.cfm?page=products_1&crid=405&contentid=515
It's considered a nutritional supplement not a drug. (Ora Sweet is another solution but that is generally used as an additive when preparing oral medication solutions as I recall using this in preparation of a particular study drug when working in pharmaceutical research) In my nursing classes we were required to have knowledge about nutritional supplements (such as enteral feeding solutions, specific solutions like Arginaid, and sucrose) but not required to make "drug cards" as they are not considered pharmaceutical in nature.
Thanks for taking a moment to help! I had seen the information on the product you referenced, but it didn't have all the information I need. I understand that it is just a supplement, but for some reason it is on my list of required med cards for this rotation, and I would much rather spend the time researching than argue with MY instructor. I appreciate the information, though.
Go to the second link. There are three links on the left side of the page with product information that should be sufficient including how supplied, dosing, contraindications and ingredients. One is FAQ, one is full product info. I think NeoSweet is an error as that is an artificial sweetener used similar to Splenda or Equal. If you have time & inclination call the mfr for the other info you need

My unit has used sucrose for a long time. We used to use the kind that JustBeachy linked to, but recently switched to the "Sweet ease" brand because the Toot Sweet has methylparaben in it. There is also one called Sweet Aid too but I don't know who makes it.
Thanks so much everyone! I think I have my enough for my card now. I really appreciate the wealth of information available on this site and the helpful people.

We use Sweet Ease sucrose solution.
No matter what the brand, they all are essentially the same- sucrose and sterile water. Some brands add preservatives, but many do not.
Sweet-Ease Natural / Sweet-Ease Preserved - Philips
Ashley,
My unit has been discussing the preservatives issue lately and recently switched brands. Sweet-Ease was the only brand that we found that didn't add preservatives (besides having our pharmacy mix it). Do you know of any others?
Thanks! -Nelly

try this site
www.micro-plus.com/index.php/en/products/sweeteners/neosweet
neosweet is sweetener based on the artificial sweetener saccharin that additionally contains a blended combination of sweet components and flavour enhancer. neosweet is comparable with the high intensity sweetness of saccharine, but without the negative taste characteristics of pure saccharin. tests have shown that neosweet aptly reflects the taste of sucrose. this explains its high palatability by the animals! the sweetening and masking capacity of neosweet® significantly impacts the bitter or unpleasant flavours produced by vitamins, minerals or medicinal products.
neosweet is available in powder and liquid form. in the powdered version neosweet is press-and mineral-stable. the powder product is only slightly hygroscopic and free-flowing, virtually dust free and therefore very user friendly.
as a liquid "spray compound" neosweet® is sprayed, for example, on pelleted feed.
mmmmm, sounds yummy.......
