Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Please somebody tell me.....

that I'm not a failure.

that it happens.

I am going to retake A&P 1 again ext semester. I'm not doing well due to reasons mostly due to the poor teacher I have, some due to me not having a great memory. I've also been really struggling with physical issues.

My husband is freaking out on me and telling me all the reasons it's a bad idea to re-take. I know there's consequences. I can do better though, and I don't understand a lot of the course. Maybe it will look bad to some school admission offices that I had to retake A&P1, but isn't it common?

It's not the end of the world right? The fail rate is 50% for this course in many colleges I've read.....that means 50% had to have a do over, and I'm sure many excellent nurses had to take it over before nursing school, right?

I feel like an idiot.:( At least I'm getting As in my other classes (Chem and Nutrition)

Hugs! You are not a failure and this does happen to people all the time. Most programs have a policy about how many times you are allowed to retake a class (mine is that you can retake science courses once each but no more, other courses you can retake however many times you want) but most will at least allow once and not frown upon you. It all depends really. When I returned to school after a 10 year break I basically had to retake A&P 1 and 2 and I am about to have to retake the micro I'm in now. I am on the waiting list for entry into the program for January but if I'm not chosen I will need a higher grade in that course for the next round (sitting at a C right now - the minimum for entry). This bugged the hell out of me and made me feel stupid at first but after talking to my adviser I felt better. She let me know that it was actually more common than people let on and that having the guts to stick in there to retake a course for a better grade shows that you really want to be there. Whether or not she was blowing smoke up my a#& I don't know but I took it to heart and it made me feel a lot better.

You are not a failure and stuff happens! You just have to pick yourself up and do what you gotta do. Don't lose sight of your final goal! Everyone takes a different path to get there so don't worry about others if you can help it. You can do it!! I am there with you!! Hugs!!

Hey! You're not a failure at all! I completely understand this semester (Fall) I dropped TWO of my classes because I was FAILING ... I was so upset with myself, but if you don't have a good teacher, that is NOT your fault. I am retaking Calculus next semester and I KNOW that I will do better because I know what to expect and I know I will have a better teacher next time around. And I did drop Biology, which I excelled at in high school (I won't have to take it again, but still) So no, you are NOT an idiot. College takes work and dedication and you just need to get into the groove of things. Don't be ashamed and don't listen to your husband, he does NOT need to be adding this stress onto you and making YOU feel bad, because it happens.

Talk to your school adviser ask what he/she recommends you do. Talk to the teacher and ask what THEY recommend. They can really help you out too. You ARE an intelligent person, don't let anything or anyone make you think otherwise.

Thank you guys.

I'm feeling better and excited because I registered for classes. I learned a valuable lesson: use your resources! I checked out my professors on ratemyprofessor.com and word of mouth and think I picked some good ones. Teachers make all the difference i have learned!

I made sure that my A&P1 was a good one especially. Her ratings all say she's phenomenal: hard but the best teacher they've ever had. And more than one person said that so she should be good. She's also the course coordinator for the biology department so she should know how to get through the class pretty well.

First off and most importantly ------YOU ARE NOT AT FAILURE!!!!!!!!

Hang in there. You can do it. If something does not make sense, post it here and see if you can get some clarification. I had a great instructor for A&P 1 & 2 and that really helped. I also used the internet to reinforce the material. I found quizzes online and took as many as I could. For the lab portion, I found as many images as I could and printed them out as 4X6 pictures. I used those as flashcards.

If you need anyhelp, let me know. I will do what I can.

You're welcome and I'm glad to read that you're feeling better and excited! Learning from the situation is the best you can do considering being upset about it won't do you any good, now you know what to do for next time and you're all set! And YES that is a great resource, I can't believe I forgot to mention that to you!

Every time I register for classes I go to that site to make sure I "got a good one" lol. definitely recommend doing that Mhm. A good instructor can truly (as we've seen) make the difference in your grade and your understand of the material.
