Need some support and advice on how to get back into nursing!

U.S.A. New York

Hello. I have attended New York City College of Technology's Nursing Program 2 years ago, but unfortunately failed out with almost being finished in the 2nd semester. Then recently right after, I took a dive and went for another CUNY school and tried for their nursing program at Medgar Evers College. I was told they give students second chances after they didn't do so well at another college so gullably I believed them and took 1 year of prereqs for their school before i retook the NLN. I had a 3.7 GPA and a composite score of 130 (91% percentile) so I thought my chances are pretty high to get back in. Sadly I did not get in. I feel like I wasted another year when I could have tried other ideas.

I really believe nursing is something I want to do for the rest of my life. I enjoy helping people a lot. I had the idea of changing my major, but I came back to nursing because I feel it fits my personality the best. I need some advice and wanted to know if anybody else was on the same boat as I am in now. If so, are there any alternative options available and what can I do to get myself back in? Thank you so much!

Anybody? I seriously need some advice in getting back into nursing. I don't care whether it's out of state or not.

First, it isn't that persons are ignoring your request for information, but persons are either at work, school, or getting on with things. It often takes time before someone will post to a query, if at all.

Next, there are more than several threads from posters in similar situations as you scattered about the site.

Try researching those responses while waiting for replies to your post.

While your determination to become a nurse is great, just because ME stated they give persons "second chances" does not mean instant entry. Did you inquire as to the reason your application for admission didn't make the cut?

As you must know it seems everyone and their mother is trying to enter nursing programs, and here in NYC the CUNY programs all have vastly more pre-nursing applicants than seats in the nursing program. If there were only say 60 slots for nursing class, and 100 applied, with 70 or so having GPA's >3.9, and high NLN ranking scores, there is your answer. Just for the record there have been students sitting at Hunter with GPAs of 4.0 and excellent NLN scores, and still didn't make the cut on their first application to the nursing program.

Personally thought CUNY nursing programs didn't admit students who failed at other nursing schools within the program, but posts from ex-College of Staten Island students stated at least their there was a process for reapplying after "failing out", but it was not a concrete promise.

Who told you ME would consider/admitt you even with a previous failing out of another CUNY program? Was it someone in the nursing department with the power to make such decisions? Did you read it somewhere in writing? Often there is quite allot of "noise" within a nursing program, and IMHO the only thing which matters is what is written down, or told to one by either the director of the program or some similar person in authority.

Right now you have several options:

Continue taking courses at ME and apply for admission to the next class.

Continue taking courses at ME and obtain your BS in another major, then go on to a "second degree" BSN nursing course.

Contact a priviate nursing program, (College of Mount St. Vincent,Long Island College Hospital, NYU, Beth Israel, Saint Paul's Queens or Staten Island, etc..) and inquire about applying there and chances for admission.

Jumping around CUNY nursing programs isn't a good idea because most if not all require transfer students to complete about a year of classes at that particular college before applying to the nursing program. This prevents transfer students from jumping ahead of those who have been doing their pre-nursing at the college from the start. Many priviate colleges however do not have such a requirement.

There is also the new BSN program that is a joint venture between Kings County Hospital/CUNY and LIU. This program takes students who have completed pre-reqs at any CUNY school, then they go to LIU for the nursing program. There are posts here in the group about this program as well.

Finally should like to mention that many persons think a career in nursing suits their personality, however the academic work is simply beyond them. While you were able to redeem your previous failure with a decent GPA, averages of 3.5 is the new "C" in most nursing programs, regardless of what course catalogs state.

Thank you for your post! :) I would like to know more about the joint BSN program of LIU and Kings County. It seems interesting and might suit the needs I have to get back into nursing. Where might I find the information for this program? I'm already planning ahead in trying for the private institutions for next year hopefully to have another chance. I took note of all the open houses so I can speak to a representative of their schools. I will let them know about my situation and if I will be just wasting my time again in their schools or not.

If you are unsuccessful finding an RN program to accept you, you might consider becoming an LPN, then seeking admission through LPN to RN programs.

If you are going to be a nurse, you should get used to doing proper research and showing initiative *LOL*

Google "LIU Kings County", and that should get you where you need to go for a start. Also IIRC, there is something on NYC's government's website, but cannot remember where.

Best of luck!

I am planning to try maybe SUNY Rockland CC and see what they say. Maybe I'll have a chance and then attend several open houses for next year. My last option would be to apply or LPN next fall and prepare for it by studying for the entrance exams. Are there any LPN schools that some suggest going to? Thanks! :smokin:
