Need suggestions regarding career change

Specializes in Orthopedics.

I've been a nurse for 2 years now, 1.5 yrs as an LPN and recent RN this past summer (Hooray for me). I've been doing orthopedics since becoming a nurse. Not a big fan of having the same patients every day, but like the people I work with, the manager, doctors, flexibility and the work environment. I'm ready for a change to the critical care environment and up for the challenge, i guess i should say. It looks great on your resume but liery about the job switch due to that the people that I work with are great! Also, some of my future jobs I would like to have (PACU, a lot of L & D floors want you to have this) What if I switch jobs and hate the unit and/or people I work with. What's your input on this situation? I'm sure there are many out there that feel the same way. I think I feel more confused about switching to another unit because they're so many options of what/where to go. I'm also nervous about the change because I'm comfortable at my job, know the routine/doctors and so on. :icon_roll

It sounds like you are ready for a change, but reluctant at the same time. I would suggest staying PRN at your current job so that if the new one isn't what you hoped for, you have something to fall back on. It can be hard to get out of your comfort zone and try a new job, but it might turn out to be what you were looking for and that chance is worth taking! :nurse:

My recommendation... try it all. If you leave your unit on good terms it leaves the door open to going back. The more you see and learn as a new nurse the more well rounded your practice will be. This is one great thing about nursing for a peron who enjoys learning and is not afraid to embrace change. It's like a smorgasboard.

I am with you, I need a change. What I want to do is work as a case manager for a work comp insurance company, from home. I just joined all nurses today after reading some old posts about this area I am interested in. Does anyone have any direction for me? I am an RN with 10 years experience in a variety of specialities. Also, does anyone know where/how to get my CCM? (cert in case management).

Anyone know anyone that works as this type of nurse that I could ask? Thank you!

Give it a try. If you don't like it, I am sure your old floor will welcome you back! If you love the staff, try a specialized ICU, like a surgical or trauma ICU. You will likely see a lot of the same doctors again.
