Need Some Advice

Published

I am in some desperate need of advice... I am trying to find a way to lose weight (I am very overweight but do not want to turn to surgical options) but cant seem to find something that is managable with the hours that a nurse has to work... the days i work I dont get home until 7:30-8 and dont have time to go to the YMCA, and it is too humid and stuffy to go for a walk.. Not to mention not being able to eat dinner at a regular time.. i come home starving and stressed and end up overeating.. the days I am off I have no energy to do anything because I have pushed myself so hard the days I work. I am only 24 but know I am headed into a downward slope if I dont get a hold of this now. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to lose weight and get in shape? I am at a loss for ideas and do not want to end up like my patients. Thanks!

There are many gyms that offer 24 hour access.

I would also find a sensible eating plan. Weight watchers is a good one to work with. It helps you to realize what a portion should be in todays mentality of deep fry and supersize. It will also help if you have a buddy to try and make these changes with to support each other or push each other if needed.

Good luck.

Plan your meals ahead of time. Pack snacks that are healthy you can eat at work, and pack your dinner. I assume you work 12 hours... 3 days, that gives you 4 days to exercise. Join a gym, curves, something and you can find the time. You have to make the commitment! I went through the same thing, but I made my lunch, dinner and took it to work, so I was not tempted to eat stuff at work. You can go to the pool at local community college, or inside gym there and do laps of walking. You can do it, just set your mind to it! NO refined carbs. Fruits, vegetables are great snacks. No cookies, breads, whole wheat bread is good, but other breads are not good for you.. Pasta cut it out, I have found whole wheat pasta noodle if I must have carbs... Drink lots of water, no soda, diet green tea by Lipton is great, cut out all soda and beverages with high sugar.... hope this helps

Weight Watchers and exercise worked for me. You can do WW on line. Exercise is a must. I have an exercise bike , I get on it 5 x week, first thing in the am works for me, then I'm done, it is also incentive to eat well during the day. I even did it before work when I worked 12 hr shifts (I lost 40# during that time and have kept it off for 3 years now). Take food to work, snacks and treats too. Do not deprive yourself totally of something you like otherwise you will just binge on it when you do breakdown and haveit. Portion size is also something you need to watch for eg know what 3 oz of meat or a cup of cereal looks like. If you use WW point system know the points for your favorite healthy treat and snck foods. Write down everything you eat, its easy to "forget" the piece of cookie or candy that you snagged as you went by the break room. Fins a support person who won't try to sabotage you. Good luck and keep us posted.

I recently lost alot of weight myself and must say that I look real good and I am so proud of myself. What I did was first make the commitment to myself and become healthy. The one thing I acknolwedged is that weight is only the symptom not the problem. You obviously have some UNRESOVLED ISSUES THAT YOU NEED TO DEAL WITH. As the weight begins to come off all the issues will come up to the surface and if you don't deal with those issues, the weight will be a constatnt struggle for the rest of your life. I think that you should ask yourself WHAT'S EATING AT YOU? When you find that answer you won't want to eat all that food that is making you overweight. I hope my advise helps you, good luck in you journey.

I agree that Weight Watchers is one of the most sensible and healthiest programs available.

My other recommendation is to set a REASONABLE goal for weight loss, such as 1 lb per week. That may sound ridiculously slow, but it only requires you to cut out or exercise away 500 cal per day, which is manageable. And a 50lb weight loss in a year would definitely be something to be proud of!

Good luck!

WALKING! WALK WALK WALK. My mother was overweight, not too much but enough to cause her some health problems. So she started walking everynight, started eating healthy. Chicken, fish, lots of fruits and veggies.... about 1500 calories a day. GOOD LUCK

My husband has been overweight ever since I met him. I love him for who he is, not what he looks like, but I always wished he would try to lose weight for health reasons. I didn't push and I don't think that I really said anything about it. He took a nutrition and exercise course as part of the requirements for graduation at the university and began to realize the impact his weight had on his overall health and future. After that and some other stimulating events he has tried several things. First the Dr. Phil thing which offered many good recipies and practical tips, but it just wasn't for him. (Although he did say that the psych part of the book really helped him get a handle on some issues re: why he ate and taking responsibility for his actions) He then tried South Beach it wasn't for him eigther, but also some really good recipies in that book. He has been doing Weight Watchers online for the longest time (almost 6 months) and it is the easiest by far. They offer lots of recipies and the good part about online is that you can put in your own recipie and it will tell you how many "points" a serving is. he finds that the Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisiene, and Michalenia's Light frozen dinners are great for busy times (and lazy times too). He has lost quite a bit of weight with just the diet and would lose more if he chose to exercise.

I am so proud of him and have every confidence that you can succeed too. Sometimes it takes trying out a few things before you find the right fit. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Good luck - you can do this.
