Best of luck!

Due to touring service I always keep way from my house, leaving behind my parents all alone at home. So I decided to place them in a nursing home where they will be more safe & secured. Can anybody help me to search out a good nursing home with best kind of facilities required by them.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, there. I happen to work in a nursing home.

Actually, the facilities and incidentals offered by the nursing home really do not matter. I've seen upscale nursing homes that provide terrible care. I've also seen hole-in-the-wall nursing homes that provide excellent care. Here are a few questions to ask...

1. What is your nurse-to-patient ratio? The typical nursing home has 1 nurse to 30 patients.

2. Would you place your mother or father here if they needed care? The person giving you the tour of the nursing home would have difficulty lying to you when asked this question.

3. What is your CNA-to-patient ratio? CNAs are the main caregivers in nursing homes, giving the showers, toileting patients, getting them dressed in the morning, and so on. The typical nursing home has 1 CNA for every 10 to 15 patients.

4. What is the shower schedule? The typical nursing home has a shower schedule of 3 times weekly (Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).

have you checked out your other posts as you have had some really good advice on this subject and some good links?

When touring the home check the residents to see how clean they are, if there are any offensive smells. Look at the neatness and cleanliness of the rooms. Look at the activity board and check out what is offered.Watch the staff interact with the residents, note how the staff is dressed. They are a reflection of the facility. Last nursing homes go through yearly state inspections by law they are to post the state survey results out in the facility to be seen by all. Ask to see it. Note what type of deficiencies they had.
