what do you need to really get into UT Houston BSN program?

Does anyone know what you really need to get into UT Houston What GPA? Also, what do they want as far as prior medical experience?

I just got admitted into UT Houston's fall 2010 generic BSN program and my gpas were a 3.75 science and 3.72 overall. As far as medical experience I had none. I believe what really nailed it for me on top of my gpas was my interview. Good luck!

Did you take the HESI A2 exam? What was your score and do you know the cutoff score they're usually looking for the HESI? Thanks :)!

No I did not have to take the HESI, I took the NET. We were the last class that had to take it but the HESI is easier than the NET

There really isn't a good answer to that question. I've gone through the threads from the last few semesters and written down the stats of people who were accepted and found a wide range of grades, test scores, and experience. Some people with GPA's of 3.2 have gotten in while some people with 4.0's have not. The same is true with test scores, medical experience, and how the people felt their interview and essay went. It's not like some schools with a point system that tells people exactly where they stand. Some of the common myths I have heard are that you can't take your sciences courses at HCC, you need a perfect GPA, your handwriting on the essay is very important, and that you need medical experience. Good luck to you and don't let other people get your hopes down. I had several people tell me that I didn't have a chance of getting accepted and they were wrong.

If you don't mind my asking what was your HESI score and overall GPA?

I just scored an 82.9% on my HESI overall.

My overrall science and nursing pre reqs are both a 3.5

but my overall gpa is a 2.9- thanks to going to school the first year with no clue and no cares. Then I took a two year break and came back to get serious. Now, I'm hating myself. Just wondering if you think there is any hope??

Thanks-

I am in the same position as you, kimberlyjeantx. I'm looking to apply for the Spring 2012 program because I have not completed enough prereqs to apply for the Fall 2011 program. I'm worried about my GPA and I have not taken the HESI yet. My gpa as of right now is a 3.51 (nursing prereqs) and a 3.1 (science prereqs). I also have a few C's from classes I took as a bio major however these classes don't apply to the prereqs needed for nursing. Does anyone know if I have any chance of getting in? I also have experience in volunteering at the hospital and 2 years back (during high school) I was a student intern for a hospital as well as an EMT service. I was able to shadow nurses and doctors at the hospital and go on several rides for ambulance calls. Will this help me any?

- Thanks for all the help in advance!

Hi Saraht13,

I'm planning to apply for the Spring 2012 program, as well. It sounds like you've got some great experience to add to your resume! Congrats! Do you know if a thread has been started for our group of hopefuls yet?

Glad I found a thread with some people applying for Spring of 2012!

I'm pretty much in this boat: I was going to do the associate's program, but since I was fresh out of high school (and from a high school that didn't offer dual credit until my senior year), it would've taken me 2 years in pre-reqs + 2 years nursing school when I can simply get my bachelor's in 1 extra semester. Now I'm working on the last bit of my pre-reqs. I haven't taken the HESI yet, but just talked to someone that did and he passed everything but the A&P section. Apparently it's really hard. I'm taking it in 2 weeks I believe. Any advice as of what to expect, because I have no idea? O__o

Just to add: My overall GPA is a 3.83 and my science GPA is a 4.0, but I'm retaking the class I made a B in that brought me down to the 3.8 so that it'll bring my overall back to a 4.0.

As far as my resume goes... Well, I'm in the honors college and phi theta kappa (I don't know if that even matters). Anyone know if high school honors and whatnot are even worth putting on a resume?

My most recent job was as an office assistant for Memorial Hermann Home Health's corporate business office. I don't know if that looks good or not, either.

I feel like I have way too many questions! Sorry! Anyways, where is everyone at in getting ready to apply? I haven't even taken my CPR certification yet.

Your stats are great! I think you have a pretty good GPA. I actually went to one of the information sessions at UTH today and they told me that for the fall 2011 class they accepted 150 students with an average gpa of 3.8. They also said the lowest GPA they accepted was a 3.25, so I think you're at a great position (judging from your gpa). About the high school honors, I talked to a friend who is in the nursing program right now and she told me experience is what they would be looking for. Sadly, when I went to the info session today, they told me that they eliminated the interview portion this year so I don't know if we'd even get a chance to tell them about any experiences. It seems like we just have to look good on paper :(

Are you serious? That is the worst news I could've possibly received. That is completely ridiculous because an interview is extremely important in my opinion. It let's the reviewer know you're competent and articulate. They shouldn't simply go off of a piece of paper. I just hope the experience thing doesn't kill me. How can I have experience? I'm 19. I've barely done any college much less worked in the medical field. Hopefully my Memorial Hermann job helps me out somewhat although it wasn't a hospital job. I have no idea what I can do to get experience, though. Any suggestions?

I know what you mean. I was disappointed when they said there was no interview process too. They're supposedly trying to see how well it worked for the fall 2011 class and if they like it, they're going to keep the same procedure. Let's just hope they hated it! :)

I agree. I'm 19 too so what possible experience can we have? I started volunteering at the hospital this semester for experience. Maybe that could help you out too? I also had experience from following the nurses/doctors as a part of this program, but that was back in high school so I don't even know if that counts. Do you know if there's an essay on the application? How do we even tell them we have experience if we don't have an interview?
