Need a little dosage calc help...

Published

Need a little help for some reason! I have had dosage down without any problems up until now at the beginning of 3rd level. I don't know if they are wording them differently or what, but I am stumped!

Order: 200 mg labetolol continuous infusion at 1 mg/min.

Supplied: 250 mL NS IV bag and a vial with labetolol 5mg/mL. The label states

to remove 90 mL from a 250 mL NS IV bag before adding labetolol.

How many mL labetolol will the nurse add to the IV bag? ______________mL

What is the total IV fluid volume (NS + labetolol)? ____________mL

To deliver 1mg/min as ordered the nurse will set the IV infusion pump at

___________mL/h.

The patients has an IV flowing at a rate of 10 gtt/min. The IV bag contains a solution of 500

mL NS with 20,000 Units of heparin. The drop factor is 15 gtt/mL.

How many units is the patient receiving every hour? __________ Units/h

How many units is the patient receiving every 24 hours? _________Units/24 h

Oh snap. I'll post my reply in the am. But I'll get u the answer

I think it's going to be like this:

Question 1:

How many mL labetolol will the nurse add to the IV bag?

40 mL (200/5=40)

What is the total IV fluid volume (NS + labetolol)?

200 mL (250-90+40=200)

To deliver 1mg/min as ordered the nurse will set the IV infusion pump at

60 mL/h (200/200*60=60)

Question 2:

How many units is the patient receiving every hour?

1,600 Units/h (20,000/500/15*10*60=1,600)

How many units is the patient receiving every 24 hours?

38,400 Units/24h (1,600*24=38,400)

I've passed my Nursing Calculation course in December 2009 so it's still fresh in my head, i hope :)

AWESOME!!! Thank you so much...now that I see it, I am wondering why I could not figure it out! LOL! It is one of those DUH!! moments...

I'm glad i could help :)

Are you going to start your clinicals? Do they give a Nursing Calculation test again before the clinicals? Is it exactly the same as in the first year or easier?

I am in 3rd level clinicals (out or 4)...at the beginning of each level, we get a dosage test that we have to pass to proceed. Before hand, they post practice questions & each semester, it seems that they get worded a little different. This semester, the way they word them threw me off at first. Now I have it down again, I passed the dosage test and am moving on with 3rd level! Thanks again!

Congrats!

Did you pass Statistics and Pharmacology? I'm still in the beginning of the program and i wanted to ask if you have any books to recommend that helped you to understand those heavy subjects or any tips regarding those?

I am doing the 2 year program & did not have to take statistics. As far as the pharm goes, it is taught as we go rather than a seperate pharmacology class. I am wishing I would have found one to take though!

Yay! I got all the parts of those right. Who would have thought that chemical engineering is everywhere, lol. Mass transfer and fluid flow, I love ya. haha

I ordered a "typical" dosage calculations book from ebay just to have some more stuff to play with while I ma sitting here taking classes that are far too easy for me.

Can anyone recommend a good "typical" pharma book that's easy to get and low priced?
