I have been offered two interviews for RN positions, one for NICU, one for Urgent Care, at a leading Pediatric hospital in my area that I currently work at as a tech. The problem is I have absolutely no desire to work in the Urgent Care and I am wondering a polite way to cancel the interview without screwing my chances with the NICU? I have been offered a position at another facility that pays $7/hr more than the Urgent Care position and I simply cannot afford the pay cut whereas the NICU pay is slightly higher than the position I have been offered. I am just so stressed because my heart yearns to work in the NICU and I don't know what to do.
To make matters worse the position I have been offered starts at the end of next week and my interviews are scheduled for next week. I am just stuck between a rock and a hard place. I know the facility that has offered me a job also has an orientation in August so do you think it would be bad on my part to request to change my orientation to August? I just do not want to miss out on the job of my dreams because I am stuck in orientation for an adult med-surg position.

I would tell them just that your heart is telling you NICU is where you want to be. I think they would rather you bow out now, then to go through expensive training and then leave.
Good luck!

Just what tokmom said. Plus, you can say that you want to give up your interview offer and give it to somebody who might probably be a much better candidate for an Urgent Care position.

Why do you need to cancel your urgent care interview? Even if you aren't interested in the field, there is no harm in going to the interview and, if offered the job, politely declining. If anything, it will give you valuble interview experience.
As far as the job offer- have you accepted the position yet? I would call the hospital and ask when they need an answer. Also tell them that you would like to start your orientation in August.
When you interview for NICU, ask them when you should expect to hear if you are hired or not. Let them know that you prefer to work on their unit, but you have another offer and you want to be respectful by giving them an answer soon. Then, if you are offered the NICU job, call the other hospital and let them know that you are sorry, but you will not be able to take the job. You don't need to explain any further but make sure you thank them for the opportunity.

Just so I am reading this correctly... You have an offer on the table that pays $7/HR more than the job's you will be interviewing for? What are the chances of you landing this dream job? Do you have your NRP and Fetal Monitoring certs? I come from the land of "Bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush" especially if the Bird in the hand pays $7/hr more.

So..your first choice is NICU and you have an interview next week. THe pay is close to the offer you already have.
At the same facility you have an interview with Urgent CAre but do not want to work Urgent CAre at all and the pay is in the dirt.
And you have a bona fide offer at another facility and the orientation starts next week and pay is competitive.
Have you already accepted the last position? IF so, negotiating your start date for later makes sense, if they will go along with that. If they won't you may have a tough choice to make--bird in the hand and all that.
One thing you don't want to do is start a job and leave after very long for another. You know that already but I just had to say it. Indulge me; my number up above says 35. (!)
ONe thing to consider---as long as you are respectful and follow some of the phrasing suggestions mentioned in these posts, you will come across as the reasonable and mature professional that you are.
