Need info on U of M Second Degree BSN

Out of our original 54 or so students, I'd say 43 graduated. A couple dropped for medical reasons, but we lost about 4 each semester who couldn't keep up and failed. I know a couple in particular who I have no sympathy for, had not cracked a book the whole semester and were surprised when they failed :rolleyes:

It does take some effort. Not a total breeze.

Typically you're in class from 8-5 (with breaks) 2-3 days a week. The other days are clinicals, usually 7-3 (some are nights, like 2-10).

Studying i'd do when I could. Depended on the day, how tired I was. I focused on one day at a time (what is MOST urgent to get done for tomorrow, then for this week). Looking too far ahead will get you in trouble unless its for a paper or something. Small steps is ideal- and KEEP UP!

I would say I study about 2 hours a night. But that is an average...some nights I'd be at school from 8 am to 9 pm, in study groups, other days I said F-it and went home to sleep LOL

I will tell you that all the students who studied, and tried, and put some effort in, DID pass the program. If this kind of thing (medicine) interest you, you'll have no problem at all.

Am I understanding correctly, your class (2005) is the last that will graduate in the fall? I was under the impression that the class starting in 2006 is August to August as welll?

They went through a lot of trouble changing the program to May-May. I was told that we were the last to grad in August, but you can confirm through the school...

I know it was no fun overlapping this summer. All the instructors were super busy and not very accessable.

So you graduated this month!? How great. Where will you work?

I am applying to both U of M and Oakland's 2nd career program. I know it is quite cometitive and am so anxious to attend either.

Elizabeth- Thanks! I took a job at Beaumont. They pay pretty good- 22.45 an hour to start, plus shift differential (2.50). Most places start about 20-22 an hour (in hospitals that is). Nervous about the boards, as anyone would be but anxious to get it out of the way!

I bet you'll do fine in any program. You've got the first ingredient, which is the desire to be IN the program and to be a nurse, and hopefully the admissions people will see your motivation and you'll do well :)

Winters are much milder than they were back in the late 80's.
Sure, you have to like snow and htis year had more snow than in the past five or six, but all in all much warmer than it used to be. I was born and raised in Michigan and was commuting until about 18 months ago to BKK. Now of course, I am here year round, but Ann Arbor is a great town with an excellent school and hospital.

I agree the winter is not too intolerable here. I have lived here most of my life also. I do find as I get older, the cold weather does affect my bones, and by the time Spring arrives, it is most welcome. Ann Arbor is a nice town and relatively safe.

Did you hire directly (fresh out of school) into the ER at Beaumont? I was thinking about the ER and Beaumont would be one of my first picks.

Can you tell me how competative it is to get into U of D Second Degree Program. What type of GPA they look for ect.

Steer clear of the U of M Second Degree BSN. The "kinks" they need to iron out still need ironing....pressing actually. They are HIGHLY disorganized, give their second career students the bottom of the clinical barrel (all the good clinicals go to the community college or traditional students), faculty don't understand how to work the technology, their tests are full of contradictions, expectations are not clearly laid out, do not treat you as a "second career" student (so much for life experience and previous degree)...I don't have time to keep going. It would be a cruel joke to recommend the program. Find a school with a more established program.

Wow, not what I would expect from U of M. Did you go through the program? I would love to hear more from your experience. How did this affect the students? Did the clinical consist of undesirable hours, location or quality? Thanks!

Hi, I am a soon to be product of Uof D Mercy's Second Degree Program......yeahhh baby, i graduate in May like ERKAtie said its very inense but doable. ERKatie when did u graduate? i am doing my advanced medsurg clinicals at Beaumont right now on 4CN, its an ok floor so far.....

i was 4 months pregnant when i started the program, i had my daughter in my second semester, my husband was the greatest he took off work so i could go back to school a week later so we were like broke but its all worked out now it was stressful going to clinicals on friday and giving birth on saturday only to return back a week later because i was only allowed to miss 2 clinical days or i would have to delay...btu God was really good to us...

their program i would say is really good, i mean every program has its kinks but they work thru theirs really well i mean my class has all original 50 people who started to gether so that is a blessing because we are the first class to ever go the whole way with the beginning number, we are very cohesive and like a family. the people are great we eve have a dr in our class, i had my undergraduate degree in biology from UCLA, so i had a bio background that helped.

Uof M is very competitive and isnt all that great, WSU is so hard to get into i applied to all 3, did not get into UM, but i got an early acceptance to UDMercy so i went there granted it is more expensive but if u start counting the dollars u will never go to school , it is worth it and they have loan forgiveness programs....its is a cool program, holler at me if u need more info i can tell u all about it......
