Need ideas for adolescent obesity prevention

Published

I am writing a paper for my Public Health Nursing class on preventing adolescent obesity re Healthy People 2010. Does anyone have any creative, innovative ideas that community nurses can implement to intervene for this population?

Thanks!

Given that diets fail, and in themselves contribute to weight gain, what about looking at fitness at an end goal, rather than a weight or BMI? You would be more likely to get a positive response from the adolescents, can still have objective progress markers, and will end up with a healthier population.

You might take a look at this website: www.todaystudy.org. It has links to a couple of other sites. It is a nationwide study which is for children with type II diabetes, and works at making lifestyle changes with the entire family of the affected child to encourage, teach, and model eating healthy foods, getting more exercise, and losing weight.

While the site doesn't give you a lot of indepth info, you may want to contact the study center for more information. It is an excellent program.
