Need Help With Electrolytes!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a nursing student. I keep getting asked everyday by this nurse at a hospital about how much an electrolyte level will go up if it is replaced. I know that for potassium every 10 mEq of KCL = 0.1 mEq of potassium in the body. But she also wants to know about 1 gram of magnesium sulfate and calcium chloride/carbonate? I tried googaling for an 1 1/2 hour with no luck. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You seem a little defensive; Spidey simply posted that TiredMD has been here for quite some time, and you might not have known that unless you've read tons of threads or clicked on his profile. Nothing negative or angry about it.

I'd like to point out that I've seen CNAs, Med aides, RTs and pharmacists on these forums. While it's a nursing oriented site, it's nice to get a different perspective. I'm personally so sick of some of the issues that can occur between physicians and nurses, I'm glad to have an MD whose posts are respectful and informative. This seems to be a newer trend in physicians--a welcome one! The younger, newer docs in our hospital are sure easier to work with, in many ways. They actually have a sense of humor, are respectful of nurses and ancillary staff, and treat us like coworkers rather than minions. TiredMD reflects this on these forums, and I appreciate his presence.

queenjean, if you read the thread, there are some defensive remarks by posters as though to imply that I was questioning his or her input or validity - which I was not. I simply asked a question - not a big deal, but some are making it out to be. What's the big hoopla over asking a question??? Really. Of course I can understand other healthcare professionals on this site and the input they have..... just hadn't seen a doc/resident post, that's all.

Now onto another topic, the student doctor network (SDN) has gotten me a little hooked... quite interesting how some of the discussions take some turns.... some not so nice remarks written about nursing... and there are nurses posting on that site. I'm a bit surprised of some "students" in pre-med or residency with some of their backwards attitudes towards nursing. That's off-topic, but it had me browsing for some time this morning... very interesting.

again, I just asked a question that did N O T have any hostility or negativity in it - it was a question that I merely wondered. Everyone, relax!

And I just answered your question and was not hostile nor negative. I mentioned that it would be impossible for you to know everyone here and just gave you some info. Relax. :D

Edited to say that I now see that this was answered for me by queenjean - thanks!

Allnurses is the first BB I've ever posted to - recently I went to the forum section of my local newspaper and wow - the ugliness there is amazing. Makes me grateful for the TOS here and the great mods.

Having said that, there are some active threads right now on AN with negative comments about docs so we nurses can be "not so nice" too.

Of course, some of the complaints are legit - :D

 huh?

So anyways.... :coollook: I think that the next time she asks you that, very nicely - in front of everyone - tell her you've done some research, but was unable to find the answer and would greatly apperciate the teaching if she could show you how/tell you what the answer is. Looking at the posts this doesn't seem to be common knowledge, so maybe she doesn't even know! How funny would that be in front of everyone?! and even if she does know, then she'd get to show off "how cool" she is. Then thank her very much, and maybe she'll leave you alone since she was able to make her point. No one expects you (or should expect you) to know that kind of stuff or anything even close to that right now. You're a student, you're here to learn, not to impress the nurses with your vast depths of knowledge. If she still doesn't stop then tell your instructor and just let her know you've got a conflict of personalities with the nurse (just do it very professionally) and would apperciate not being paired with, or working directly with her. Soon enough she'll find another poor soul to bother. But hey, kudos to you for trying to look up the answer and good luck with that whole situation!
