Need help

Published

This is my first time using this forum. I found this on google while looking for nursing information , and it was really helpful.

My dream has always been to be a nurse. Over the years I went into other professionals which were much easier to reach. I'm grateful for the experience I have got, but I still want to pursue my nursing career. I called Ottawa university and I was told I need Biology, chemistry, Math, and English all 4U. I have registered in an adult high school and they are going to start me off with chemistry. I'm excited and anxious at the same time. Ottawa university wants 84 score in these 4 difficult courses. Sciences, and Mathematics were never my greatest strength but seem to be the pathway if I'm going to achieve my dream. Has anybody gone through this process before? How are these four courses 4U at high school? I want some information please that will help me realize my dream of being a Nurse.

I never went to adult night school or any kind of school out of high school. I don't live in Ottawa either so I cannot speak in that area but I have heard or know people who have gone back to school and did really well. Make sure the school is obviously credited, like a learning centre. That's really important. Depending on whether or not you finished high school, A. Or finished high school but took all college courses, B. You'd have to do courses from grade 9 to 12 at the U level, is my understanding. It is good that learning centre, or even online learning is somewhat cheap. For you to do the whole high school courses again, it should't be that expensive either. Keep in mind you obviously have to do really well, if you don't get into UOttawa you could always try college/university programs that offer a BSCN in nursing, you also have the credits to do so if you chose that route. I'm like 98% sure Algonquin and UOttawa have a collaborative program together which is 4 years. Finally, if you do pre-health, MOST colleges see this as access/pathway to nursing into the collaborative programs (please ask and triple check this with Algonquin), not only nursing but it can get you into MRT and other programs also if you get good marks and are successful... I am not specialized in helping people with career paths, but this is only my knowledge, please contact the college before applying :)

If you are going to an adult high school, research it well to be sure that the courses that you take will be accepted by the college which you hope to attend. I am not sure about Canada, but in the US, there are some advanced placement high school classes that offer a test at the end of it that a university may or may not accept depending on the score of the advanced placement test.

I would make an appointment with the guidance counselor of the university you would like to attend first. Get a clear picture of what you have, what you need, and the best path to take. Once you have that information, I would go to the guidance counselor at the adult high school, and do the same thing.

I would not put out any money or time unless you are sure that it is going to be accepted by a university. Is it possible for you to take say a math online through the college? Is there an aptitude test that you can take at the college that will pinpoint exactly what you need?

Best wishes and good luck in this journey! Very exciting time!!

Thank you so much for your help. I started already on the Adult High School journey since March 2015 online. It is free and it is credited for sure. I did a CAT test and the results pushed me to start Biology from grade 10 which I did very well. I had been out of school for more than 10 years! Now I am at grade 11. I am always anxious if I will have the high score in grade 12 to be accepted in Ottawa University. I am always like that any new thing is such a big stress for me until I get used to it. I guess all I have to do now is to hope for the best.

Thank you so much for your help. I called the university and the information I got was I need a minimum of 84% in Math, English, Biology and Chemistry all 4U. but yes, thanks for the advise I will ask to have a meeting with the Career Guidance Consellor.
