I need some quick advice from you guys. I have been trying to get recertified as a nurse assistant so I can start back working in the healthcare field while in school. I received a phone call this morning from a nursing home where I put in application, they have a training class for NA (3 weeks short) and I have an interview this afternoon. My question is this. I am now making a little over $12 an hour at my current job and once I start working as a NA will start out with like $8 an hour. Would that be a smart move. I REALLY want to start back working as a nurse assistant till I graduate in about 2 more years. What do you guys think. Should I go for it? Thanks in advance for your advice/opinions!

It depends on whether you can hadle it financially and if it is what you really want to do. It sounds like this is something you really want to do. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

heres a thought...in my state (Florida) you only have to work 16 hours every 6 months to keep your certs as a CNA. If you could get re-certified, maybe you could do PRN as a CNA, or even through agency. You can totally set your own hours and schedules and still have the benefits of the CNA cert. Your current job sounds like a decent salary, can you make it on 8 bucks an hour?

Also another thought....LTC facilities are ALWAYS short staffed, which means you can prob get all the overtime you want. I get about 4 days of overtime in each pay period, and my rehab facilty pays 35 bucks every time you sign up for an extra shift.

Youll have to do the math....Im sure if you wanted to do the overtime as a CNA, youd prob come out earning MORE than you are now. Good luck

both previous posters make good suggestions. let us know what you decide.

Thanks for replying. I went on the interview and looks like I'm in. She said she will call me when my drug test results come back which will not be a problem. She said once we finish the training we are offered a position with the facility and we we don't take we will have to pay for the class which is $600. If I do decide to take the position, I have to work for them at least a year or again pay for the class. I figure, if I can find a job some where else paying more, I can pay back the $600 and life goes on. I have to talk to them about paying me more because I am experienced as a CNA. I just haven't worked it in a couple of years and my license expired. However, I will keep you posted. Thanks for listening. By the way, as far as money goes, my DH has my back. As long as I can pay my truck note, insurance and cell phone bill! I should be able to handle that!

awesome. I am glad things are working out for you.

I start Monday. I would have normally been off due to the MLK Holiday but looks like I will be starting my first day of training. I am so happy Igot in. I will keep you guys posted on how everything goes. I'm pretty much familiar with the CNA duties but I sure some things have changed or have been added to the role. I'm just glad to be back in the healthcare field working. Thanks for listening!

i need to get re cert in georgia from movinf from florida 8 months ago. ive been trying at it since may of 2006 and my certificate expired in october during that time. georgia don is a hoax i think, since they let this happen. they have had MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME to do so before 10/16/06 and its now january 2007.
