The WAR between days and nights!
I think there are frustrations in just about every profession. I can remember when I used to work for Kodak on night shift, that day shift would come in and b*#* about night shift, or vise versa. I definately think men are more easygoing and "to the point" while in a nursing profession. Women are emotional creatures...both on the job and off. If you do go to school and go into nursing...just ignore the ones with overinflated egos...(they dont know as much as they think)...... Good luck to ya!

harrassed at work..need sound advice
I work in LTC. Recently the facility hired a shift supervisor. This RN-BSN makes derrogatory comments about the other nurses and, most often the CNA's. She has even named some of them by name, stating that she can't stand them, and that they are lazy. The nursing assistants she mentioned are anything BUT lazy, they are two of our best. She speaks in a condescending manner, discriminates as to what staff she wants on her wing, and has been harrassing staff in this manner since week one of her hire. She loves power, and she despises anyone who shows any form of independence while doing their work. I am on another unit, and oftentimes a couple of the CNA's will come to me in tears about the treatment they are receiving. I have made the phone calls and written complaints to management, yet night after night, this continues. I am at a crossroads. I have been in LTC for 12 years and have seen this type of treatment before, and I am guilty of being one of those who just didnt want to get involved or do the paperwork. This time it's different, because I am involved in a more direct level because comments are now being said about me. Saying that a person is lazy can affect their job..or saying they dont perform their required duties, also will affect their job, if this is being reviewed by management. Now, what can I do that I am not doing now, and what advice can I give these nursing assistants as well?

Why did you become a nurse?
Just a general question...Why did you become a nurse, or want to be a nurse? Ive had a couple RN's tell me that now it NOT the time to become a nurse, and if you work as a nurse, you will get sued! Can you believe it>? Well...Im interested to know WHY some of you became nurses?

Swollen Ankles
I work as a rehab tech on noc shift. I am a nursing student as well, and lately my ankles SWELL so bad. I have never experienced this before. Im on my feet quite a bit, as I work on a sub acute care unit. Has anyone else experienced this? Im still searching for the right shoes as well. I must have gone through about 10 brand names so far, with easy spirit being my favorite, but they break down quickly. How many of you get swollen ankles??

Would you want to be a patient in your hospital?
Id be an ornery patient in my rehab center..the kind who puts on the call light "just because". Id have a timer in one hand and a rubber band in the other...so I could shoot it across the room at whatever aid came to help me.

Obesity
Im curious...how obese is this person? I work with somne overweight people...very overweight, In fact our noc shift supervisor is well over 300..and she does her job..plus countless other tasks that are not asked of her. What tasks is she not performing? Is she able to perform CPR if theres a code? If she cant...wow...something to think about yeah?

New Grad to Central Florida
Hi! I have several friends who are working for Florida Hospital in orlando, and they love it. The benefits are outstanding. Also, in Brevard, Parrish med Center just completed their multi million dollar new hospital, and are doing alot of recruiting for new hires. Its a great place and I have heard that the shift differentials and sign on bonuses are great, I believe when I looked it up on the web, its like 3-5 dollars an hour, which is really good for this area. As far as housing, rents have gone up here quite a bit. You can expect to pay around 8-900 bucks for a 2 bedroom house, and thats the LOW end in Brevard, I expect Orlando is about the same. I like Brevard because its definately slower paced than Orlando, but they are building up ALOT around here, and its getting to be a busy place as well. Best of Luck to you. PS you can look up Parrish Medical Center on the web, I believe thier new website is up and running now.

Strongest Asset(s) for Nursing
I totally agree with empathy. I also think logic and judgement are also excellent qualities in nursing. Many of the RN's I have worked with are absolutely brilliant in thier "book knowlegde", however a couple of times they havent been very logical in common sense decisions, but then again, that can happen to anyone after working 15 hour shifts !! I also think organization is important as well, and the ability to time manage your many duties while on the floor.
