I have answered your question in the UK forum, there are lots of good resources in the UK that you can use for your essay.

With pre-assessment you have to mention the NICE guidence for assessment, which are excellent and comprehensive but personally I find that they leave little room for clinical judgement.

There is also loads of good information on the Leeds site

just because the department i was in said i couldn't go to some place for a clinical wouldn't stop me. are you in the u.s.? most places these days have written patient information explaining the process that a patient is going to go through. i would either show up at this pre-op clinic or call them on the phone and tell them your doctor wants you to have some surgery and you are calling for information about what happens when you go to their facility. this comes under their customer service obligations. tell them you never had surgery before, you're scared and you want a step-by-step explanation of what's going to happen to you when you get to their facility. my sister-in-law did this with 3 outpatient surgery centers and went back and told her doctor where she wanted to go! i'm not kidding! if you go in person, ask for a pamphlet. many places or doctors offices give their patients a written set of instructions to follow. make sure you have a good story ready. i go to outpatient surgery for my colonoscopies. my pre-op instructions come from the doctor, but i have called the surgicenter that he works out of for specific information and always gotten my questions answered.
