Hi, as part of a class project, I'd like to interview someone on there on-the-job interpersonal communication. Your time is appreciated.
1. How long have you been an RN?
2. What types of communication do you engage in during your work day/week?
3. What style of communicator are you? In other words, would you say that at work you are more task-oriented or more relationally oriented? Do you wish your job would allow you to communicate differently?
4. How does your communication differ from situation to situation? Does it differ greatly or are you consistently the same?
5. Does your position significantly influence the flow of communication to you from patients?
6. What are the significant differences in the way you communicate with people on the job as opposed to the way you communicate with people when you're not on the job, and where do you feel you are more effective? Why?
7. How does your role at work influence your perception of your work environment? How do you think others perceive you because of this role?
8. If you want something from somebody, what do you say and how do you say it to persuade them to do it? Quote yourself please.
9. How does your position, work environment, and communication style influence your ability to listen to a problem? What types of problems are you more willing to listen to than others? What do you say to someone who comes to you with a problem? Quote yourself please.
10. What do you say someone who has made a mistake? Quote yourself please.
11. When solving problems on the job do you
a.) pass it on to a higher authority
b.) try to find the most pleasing solution for all
c.) compromise
d.) make the decision yourself
What did you do? Quote?
12. Describe any other aspects of nonverbal communication (such as body language, eye contact) that impact the way you do your job.
13. What happens if someone is late to work or coming back from lunch? What method is used to keep track of people's work hours. Is a person's schedule rigid or flexible?
14.Is there anything you wish you would have learned about on-the-job communication in school, but didn't, that you've had to learn? What was the most difficult thing about on-the-job communication (verbal or nonverbal) for you to learn? What is the most important thing about on-the-job communication that you have learned?
Thank you so much for your time.

Your best bet is to find a friendly RN where you live, offer a free cup of coffee and do the survey.

Gee . . . that's a lot questions! I think my answers would be just a little too much for the forum - I will PM.
