Published

Im a male junior in highschool. I have always wanted to go into the medical field, and nursing is the best for me. I feel like it would be exciting yet challenging at the same time. The thing is though i have a 3.25 soon to be 3.3 gpa. Would this affect me getting into a nursing major? If i work really hard i know i can do it! I just dont know if i can get in.

Yes, you can get in but it depends........ On whether or not you apply to a 'waiting list school' or a 'competitive admissions' school. A wait list school has basic criteria to be admitted, your grades are certainly indicative of the ability to qualify for admission here. You pass your entry exams, maybe take some pre-requisite courses and then go on a wait list to be admitted. The other type of school, competitive admissions, uses a point based scale to decide who gets accepted each semester. The point totals are usually a combination of your grades from an admission exam (the HESI or TEAS) combined with your GPA of the pre-requisite courses taken. This means you need to be accepted to the college, take some pre-reqs, do well and score well on your entrance exam. If you do, your point score will be high enough to be accepted into the nursing program. Most successful applicants have 3.5 ish grades and high 80's on exams. Obviously this varies with the schools. See you guidance councillor for help in selecting schools to apply to, or go online and do some research yourself. Costs vary widely too. Hope this helps, good luck.

I agree, see your counselor about your plans. When I went to my local CC, they used a point system and waitlist. You got up to 10 out of 20 points from a preadmission test(did well, got 10). Then you get 1 point per every science or math class within the previous 5 years, then a point for having a CNA certification. I had 18 and did not any problems getting in. Again, depends on the school.

If possible, do your pre-reqs at a CC to cut costs. Also, you can start over with these classes and maybe up your application with volunteering, etc. Good luck =)

Your GPA is good but if you can increase it that will even be better. I will also strongly advise you to either shadow a nurse or even volunteer at a local hospital becuase that will make you stand out, because sometimes it is not just about GPA but how you show the school that you are really passionate about nursing. Also make sure your application essay states why you want to do nursing or circumstances in your life that has led you to choose nursing.
