Need help with new grad resume

Published

Hi, I'm a new grad RN with extensive work experience in other fields. I'm curious how other people in this same situation adjusted their professional resume to incorporate their new RN info. I currently have the order of my resume to read Summary/Work Experience/Education. Is using a summary considered outdated? What else should I lead with?

Did you include your school clinical experience as actual nursing experience? I feel odd saying that since that experience is so limited and I don't consider myself experienced enough with anything to put it on a resume.

Thank you for your feedback.

I only mentioned my other career in a brief heavily worded sentence under a section at the bottom, "other employment". My nursing resume only contained healthcare experience (which at the time I also had), but did include all my college degrees under the education section. I mention that a comprehensive resume of my other career is available. If I can, however, I will submit both resumes.

You want to spend time bringing in your history in a paragraph within your cover letter. Make it heavy with information but very to the point.

clinical experience as a student is not properly included in your resume or cv as all students who graduate are presumed to have had clinical as part of their education.

exception: if you did a senior practicum or "leadership" experience or "capstone," whatever they call it in your school, where you worked 30-40 hours per week for a semester with a staff nurse in a particular specialty to which you are applying as a new grad, you can include that to make your app stand out compared to other new grads, but only on your first round of apps. after you are hired as an rn, drop it off your resume/cv and show only actual rn experience.

@GrnTea thanks for the comment! I knew you weren't supposed to list your clinical experience because it's a standard every nursing grad would have but didn't know to list my perceptorship/leadership experience. After graduation our college required a one month perceptorship to complete our curriculum and receive our diploma. I will update my resume with that listed. I am a new grad as well looking for my first job.

I must update and say that I did not list my perceptorship and it was not necessary on my resume. I did however, when asked if I had experience outside of clinicals list internships I did on a surgical & ob unit and listed my perceptorship/leadership experience there.
