Need help making a decision

Published

Hi! OK so this is my first post, im not sure i'm even posting in the right spot, so I'm going to apologize for that in advance... lol, sorry.

OK, so long story short, my guidance counselor gave me horrible advice, and so I ended up applying to college VERY late. My first choice was going to be the practical nursing program at Seneca, but it was closed, so applied to BSCN and RPN programs at Cambrian, Seneca (just rn) and centennial. I got alternatives from Cambrian for pre-health, and I was going to take it at Seneca, but then I found out the practical nursing program is open again at Seneca, but for WINTER 2015...

So, I need advice in the following: I don't know if I should take the pre-health course, and apply to the RPN program at Seneca next fall... or take my chances, and apply to the winter program instead.. but that means losing all my acceptances for fall...

ps, my courses are

ENG Uni - 80

Functions Uni - 78

Chem U - 70

Bio U - 80

Anatomy U - 87

Nutrition M - 96

French C - 86

Think I can get in? (to the rpn program at Seneca)

Yeah, definitely. Why did you choose practical nursing over BScN though?

The main reason being how long it'll take.. since my grades were a little below needed, I'd have to go through the rpn to rn bridging program which is 5 years instead of 4. Which I was fine with, until I found out that because my guidance counselor told me to wait so long, I'm on the waiting list for all my rpn program choices, and can't get in this year. So that means I'll have to wait and apply eaflot next year, which puts me at 6 years to get my degree.

I could also take pre-health, then apply to either program but there are no real guarantees with that, and I also don't see a point seeing as how I already have my pre-requisites, and the grades aren't too bad.

I also decide practical nursing would be better for me because its less school, cheaper, and RPN's are currently more in demand than RN's.

Yeah, it totally makes sense. Practical nursing is more realistic for me since I am have decent amount of loans from my first degree (going into my 4th year of study). So, I don't really have an option for BScN. By the way, just in case you didn't know, there is an option for January admission into practical nursing and it isn't too late to apply.

Also, I've heard that RPNs in Ontario/Canada in general have an increased scope of practice, and I think it's pretty good route for you choose this route instead of BScN. I feel like four years is a long commitment, maybe you'll love/hate nursing after the 2-year practical nursing program. Oh, may I ask what programs you have applied to for practical nursing?

Practical nursing at Cambrian - wait listed bscn Cambrian wait listed, and I'm wsiting to hear back from Seneca for the bscn.. the rest I haven't heard back from.. and I heard about the January program, but I was told that its all 4 semesters consecutively, so in order to catch up with the group that started in the fall.. but that's the route I'm leaning towards.. I'm just a little worried that if I reject my alternative programs and wait for the January program that I might not get in.. decisions, decisions.. ahaha

With those marks, you can get into RPN program for sure. Your better off applying for the January session than wasting a year in Pre-Health.

I just finished pre-health at George Brown. Your marks are great so I would say do not take pre-health. It is a huge money grab and it would be awful to pay all that money and chance not doing as well as your highschool marks and not getting in. If practical nursing is better for you I think you should hold off and apply for January start. You will pretty much definitely get in because my marks aren't as good as yours and I was accepted

Good luck!
