Hey all so I'm faced with a big dilemma at work. I currently work as an FNP at a pediatric office. I've now been there for 2 years and my contract is up for renewal. My boss popped me with a big request she wants me to sign a 3 year contract instead of my usual year to year. She also now wants a 30 mile non compete clause for one year after, extending to both family and pediatric practice.
So I'm happy with where I am but my pay is low at 75,000. My benefit package is fair totaling about 12,000 per year.
My previous years billings were about $350,000, averaging 20 patients per day. I work 40 hours per week with one Saturday per month.
So my biggest question is what salary should I ask for since she is wanting such a large amount of time. I'm paranoid about giving up all my negotiating power for 3 years.
Any and all advice is appreciated!

Welcome to AN! Remember, you do not have to accept what they are offering, it is called "negotiating". 1. NEVER sign a no compete clause. No one has a right to restrict your future earnings AFTER you leave them. Also, they are a pediatric practice but want to restrict you going to work for a Family Practice? Sure, we get that many of your patients might want to follow you to the next clinic if you leave, but as FNPs this current employer is preventing you from earning a living in a different specialty. If you want to negotiate, tell them to take out the Family practice section (but again, do not sign a no compete clause). See if they will stick to peds only. A lot can happen in 3 years, if you are willing to do a 2 year contract then get it changed to that. I turned down a 3 year contract. The one time I had a 3 year contract I was a Navy nurse, in those 3 years Desert/Shield-Storm occurred & I was deployed on a hospital ship. Longest 3 years I can remember! As for your salary, very low, 87K including your benefits! Do you get any bonuses? Profit sharing or productivity? Locally, FNPs start at 90-95K, standard is 5 days CME with $1500 for CME including conference costs/hotel/travel/airfaire/meals. Does your employer pay for your DEA/pharmacy license/malpractice? How much vacation & sick leave do you get? What is included in the 12K benefits? And just in case, have you looked for other NP opportunities in your area? I am very curious, what state are you in? How long have your worked for them? Sometimes if they won't raise the salary, try to get more vacation, another 5 days is not going to kill them.
Yeah that's really how I feel. I feel likes it's a little over bearing. They currently pay for my health insurance I get 2 weeks vacation and 5 days cme with a 1500 dollar allowance, no direct sick time. They also pay for license fees including state and DEA. I've been with the practice for 2 years. I just started getting productivity bonuses via RVUs quarterly. I haven't looked else where cause I've been content and I feel like having peds experience will be a selling point for later in my career. I work in Kentucky.

1. Never sign a no compete.
2. You billed 350,000 DOLLARS and got paid a whopping 75k? That's about 22% you're getting. You're being taken advantage of especially if you JUST NOW began receiving productivity bonuses. You ought to be banking closer to 200k. How much has this piece of **** pediatrician been taking home off your back?
3. Find a new job and quit.
4. Don't split hairs over the licensing fees and DEA. They don't cost that much, and if you start barking for more stuff you're going to lose more stuff.
You want SALARY + PRODUCTIVITY BONUS + > $1000 CME, health benefits, and a retirement plan with contribution. Most clinicians don't get sick time. Don't get upset about that. Professionals are expected to show up for work, however, professionals should also have the expectation that there is latitutde in what you do with your daily schedule. You're also a professional so 3+ weeks of VACATION time is what you should see (and CME should never count against that).

I signed a noncompete too, but 10 miles within same specialty. 30 miles is insane. Definitely wouldn't sign three year contract either. At 75k with two years experience, you are being taken advantage of. You are billing $350,000 and deserve a portion of your earnings. Your value to the practice speaks for itself.
