Here is how my story goes. I've taken A&PI in the winter quarter and came out with a C. I registered my A&PII along with Alegebra and ended up withdrawing from both class. I got behind in Algebra because I was concentrating so hard on A&PII. I needed an A in A&PII to make up for that C in A&PI, but was at a low B average before the last day to withdraw. I withdrew because I knew in my mind I had to make all As on the next three exams to come out with an A. Now, for the summer I registered once again for A&PII and also microbiology. I've started studying as of today for my A&PII material so I can stay on top of everything. My goal is to come out of both class with an A. The school I'm looking to get into is Southern Union Community College in Opelika, AL in the spring of 2009. I'm also going to apply at Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City, AL in the fall of this year. I doubt I get into CVCC because they give you points for your A&PI, A&PII, micro, and reading compass. I've only taken A&PI and passes with a C so far. That's 10points+my reading compass score is a 86=96 points total. I don't think that's gonna be competative enough for me to be accepted because there deadline is July 7th to apply. I have classmates told me I'm insane for taking A&PII and micro together. My fiance even told me I'm trying to put too much on myself at one time. I really want to get into the nursing program in the spring of 2009 instead of me waiting until the fall of 2009. I'm tired of waiting. I know if I make these A's, that would give me a grand total of 156 points with my three science classes and my reading compass. I'm thinking of retaking the reading compass to score in the 90s. I know if I don't pass with two A's, then I'll be waiting until the fall anyways, but I will be devistated. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I'll be paying out the pocket for these two science classes, because I want my financial aid to go to the other community college, which is closer to my home, I'm attending this fall. I'm just so confused right now. Class starts July 1st. I've already registered, but I have until then, to decided. Please help!!

Hi! I took A&PII, Chem I, & Micro all in Summer '98 & survived w/ B in all 3! Have to admit it was tough, but wanted to hurry through my MLT Program! That was also before kids! I am starting ADN program this fall & have to retake A&P II this summer! I am holding off on Micro till next summer as I have 2 small children & husband now! So I say go for it if you are up to the challenge! Good luck!
I also know your pain of paying out of pocket! I don't qualify for Financial Aid & am going to have to get student loans for nursing school! I am still paying on loans from my 1st Associate Degree in Lab(MLT)! So I also payed out of pocket for this past spring semester & this summer! I have found that I am more determined to make good grade when it is my money being spent! Made A in A&PI this spring along with 2 other pre regs.
I also have a 2yr. old, stepdaughter who's 5, and a husband as well. I am going to strive for the best. I'm gonna give it my all. I guess I rather try and see, than not to try at all and wonder.

Okay let me get this straight. You got a C in A&P 1 and then you were unable to take A&P 2 w/algebra successfully and ended up withdrawing? Did you take A&P 2 w/algebra during a regular qtr? If you did then I think it makes no sense for you to try and take A&P w/micro during the summer. I am not trying to come across as rude or anything I promise.
I have completed all of my prereqs so I can speak to the difficulty of those two specific classes. A&P 2 is more complicated than A&P 1. A&P 1 is more rote memorization while A&P 2 is memorization coupled with rather complex concepts. Micro is like A&P 2 in that respect. There is a lot of stuff you have to memorize and it is combined with complex concepts. Lastly, you have to remember that you will have two labs, and that you will cover the same amount of material as students who take those classes in the longer quarters. Now I am not saying that I think you are incapable of taking both classes during the summer and getting A's. That is not my point at all. What I am trying to do is relay to you the difficulty of the material that you are going to be expected to learn and given the fact that you struggled with A&P 2 and algebra together during (I am assuming) a regular quarter I would advise against taking A&P and micro concurrently and especially in the summer.
When it comes down to your application the selection commite isn't going to say "oh she got B's in both of these but she took them at the same time and during the summer to boot so it's okay." They are just going to see that you got B's and move on to the next person who got A's.
I hope my humble opinion helped you with your decision. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. It's just so hard because I really want to be in the nursing program by the spring of 09. I know if I mess up once, then my chances of getting in the program would be postponed anyway. The reason it's so hard because I'm paying out of pocket and if I see myself not getting at least an B on the first test of micro and A&P, then I will withdraw immediately in mico and concentrate on A&P so I can successfully get my A. The problem is I know the tuition from the micro class will just go down the drain. How do some nursing schools look at withdrawals if you're doing it to better your grade and not mess up your GPA? This is such a hard decision for me to make, but I need to make it fast. There are pros and cons to everything. The pro is I'll have a better chance getting an A in both classes if I take them by itself. The con is, I'll be looking to get in the program in the fall of 09 instead of the spring. That's a six months delay toward my goal.
Think of it like this. The 6 months are going to pass regardless. I think it would be far wiser to take only one class during the summer. You are going to be much happier w/your A and way less stressed. If you don't get A's in both classes your gonna be upset and still probably have to wait the additional 6mo to get in and you'll be spending more money to retake more classes. The best things come to those who wait...
About withdraws, you should check on that w/the school(s) you are applying to. Some schools in my area view them as a failed attempt to complete a prereq & count them against you while others don't care how many times you failed or withdrew.
Again good luck.

The schools I'm applying to do not look kindly on Ws. I think my CC limits the number of Ws you can have and still apply to the program. It might be different other places and probably is, but a pattern of withdrawing is never good.
