Need advice on leaving a job

Nurses New Nurse

Published

So I am a new grad and am currently going through orientation for the float pool at a local hospital (same hospital that I externed at). It was my only offer at the time, so I jumped on it. Yesterday I got hired at a huge hospital in a big city (about 1.5 hours from my house) in the neuro dept. I have been wanting to move to this city for the past few years (just waiting for graduation) and have been wanting to work in critical care for experience so I can eventually make in into trauma.

Here is my problem. I don't start for another month and I am sort of afraid to let my job now know because they will probably let me go rather than put all the time and effort into orienting me (and I don't blame them). I need a paycheck just as much as the next person. I know I am not staying at this current job and have a schedule for the next month already written. I do intend to give them notice, but don't know if I should let them know now or in a few weeks so I can make some money and not be sitting around for a month. I don't want to burn any bridges. Another issue is that I have family working at this local hospital and don't want to seem like a big flake.

Some...ANY advice would be great:confused:

Float pool isnt good for a new grad anyways..

Give them your 2 weeks notice when its time, and be done with them. Then go to that big hospital that you want to work at - it will be so much better for you anyways!

When i first graduated, I found out 2 weeks later I was moving to Texas with my husband. To be fair, I stayed 3 months before moving, not because I wanted to, but I was able to.

Since you dont have that option, you just need to give the 2 weeks notice and go. You'll be glad you did.

Good luck!

Only speaking personally....

I don't think I could continue to mislead my current employeer.

Who cares what your family or others think? Figure out what you can live comfortably with.

Do that.

Congrats on the new job!

Thanks. I am definately torn by the decision, but I also have a family to support and have to think about them. Thanks for the reply though.

It's a 'business is business' world. This is strictly a business decision. I would wait and give my two weeks notice when it's time to go. You'll still be working for them until that time and will be giving them their money's worth in nursing care. It's not deceitful in any way...it's simply a business decision on your part and they would be doing the same thing to you if the hospital decided they needed to cut some positions. They would wait until it hurt them the least and then make the announcements that some people were being cut. When you give your notice, don't let them make you feel guilty or apologetic about your new job. It's the opportunity you've worked for and you're taking it! Good luck!

Thanks, that is good way of looking at it!

2 weeks notice and maybe a good valid reason (in addition to the new job) will help with the facility understanding and not impacting their view of your family.

I was laid off in a downsizing. Do you think my former employer gave me a big fat notice so that I could begin to look for a job to pay my mortgage? I didn't even get two weeks notice. The other nurse who was laid off at the same time found out before I did and she called me on the phone and was the one who told me. She got two days more time to look for a new job than I did. Business is business. You said yourself that you need your paycheck. Maximize your pay before you go. After all, you won't be going in to your job to go watch TV in the breakroom. And good luck at your new position!
