Need advice about job offer!

Published

Hi all,

I'm a new grad and seeking a job for 5months. Finally, I've just got job offers from 2 hospitals. (A&B)

'A' hospital is a very famous magnet hospital. But the starting date for the particular unit is end of March, 5 months later.

'B' hospital is a small teaching hospital. Staff are very kind and it is family like environment. I can start here in early Dec.

I'm very tired to find a job so I accepted the 'B' and asked 'A' give me a little time to think. I like both hospitals and don't know what to do.

The reason why I accept 'B' is of cause money and I think it's not good to have 10month gap between school and the first job.

Can I accept the offer from 'A' and cancel later? I know it's very selfish but I may don't like 'B' or I may be asked to resign during orientation... I think too much.

Any idea or advise??

I am a bit old fashioned and don't think it is a good idea to accept a job with the intention of "trying it out" and maybe quitting to go elsewhere in a short period of time. If you truly prefer the position with the later start date, contact them, explain your situation and ask if there is anything they an do to allow you the opportunity to start working and earning sooner. I assume the start date reflects the beginning of a hospital orientation or intern program. Would they allow you to start on the unit first? What about a PCT position temporarily?

I would try and work with them before resorting to taking a position that you may not stay with. Depending on the size of your town and the networking of managers in the area, that could backfire when you apply for future positions.

1. Talk with hospital A, explain your situation, and see if there is any way they can help you earn some money sooner.

If not, then you simply have to decide whether or not they are worth the wait. If you accept the offer at Hospital B, you have a moral obligation to give it a fair try. Don't go to Hospital B with no intention of staying. Stick it out for at least a year or two unless there is something terribly wrong with them. Hospital A will still be there in 2 years.

Sometimes, we don't get the perfect job exactly when we want it. Sometimes, we have to accept something else and make the best of it for awhile. If that is the situation with you, don't ruin your reputation by treating hospital B badly.

Well, maybe its because I'm a little bit of a small town girl, but I would go for options B. Small teaching hospitals are awesome because the staff all know one another but they still have the scholastic type environment. Magnet status doesn't mean everything. There are plenty of nurses on this board who will attest to that fact.

Also, I'm with Jolie--don't accept both positions with the intention of trying one out to see how it works. Hospitals invest big time money in new grads. Don't screw them over.

I agree with all of your posts.

I decided to go to hospital 'B'.

As Dolce said, I like their environment. During the 3 hour share time, I was very comfortable even though it was my first visit.

I'll focusing on this hospital for at least 1-2 years.

Thank you for all your advices... My headache is gone~
