Need Advice! -CNA

Hi, sorry your first client sounds so challenging. From the term "client", I'm thinking you are doing home care? If so, I don't think it was right of the company to give you this assignment as your first, especially if they know you are a new CNA. I would ask for a different client, explaining that you think this one would benefit from a more seasoned CNA. If you are determined to take on this client, be very firm, do not tolerate any sexual talk but don't show any shock either- lots of them find that gratifying. When I have a hitter or grabber, I work with them from the side, never getting directly in front or within easy grabbing range. Most important, if at any point you feel you are in danger or are really afraid- not just first day jitters- leave and call your company immediately. I had to stop going to a client when her son kept "accidentally" brushing up against me and then decided to "show"me his gun (real gun, not term for private part lol). Your life is worth more than any job. Be safe and good luck!

Thank you so much! Your advice will come in handy when I start. I will keep all of that in mind, and will reach out to my company with my concerns. This client lives within a facility, and the family hired my company to do one on one care with them while they are living there, so I am hoping I will have back up from the other CNA's and nurses if something were to happen.

Before you are assigned to violent patients, you should have CPI training, at the very least.

Depending on your state regs combative can be taken as refusal and you are not obligated to provide care. Find out details before you start (not from previous caregivers, from law research or a trusted nurse)
