2nd OPT?

Hello all!

I found this forum a few days ago while researching nursing schools in the us and it has been the best place for finding information!:redbeathe

I'm interested in getting a 2nd BS in nursing but since I got my first diploma in the states I also have an (old) OPT card. However, I never worked under an OPT status because I went back home less than 2 mo of receiving it. I guess my question is if I'd be allowed a 2nd OPT if I were to be accepted into and upon completing the program? I know the situation is pretty dire for recent grads at the moment and am not sure how I'd be able to get any work experience w/out it.

If this question has already been answered, I apologize and hope someone can point me in the right direction as I'm still trying the figure out how to navigate around this site.:confused:

    I think you may find that having OPT even though you didn't work with it may have an impact on a second OPT. Usually to receive another OPT the course has to be higher than the first one

    Though I am a bit discourage (after further reading about the lack of job opportunities for newly grads and the retrogression) I haven't completely given up on attaining a nurses degree in the us..just yet.

    Ugh! Sorry if I came off sounding like a brat in my previous post.:uhoh21:

    I realize that I'm fortunate to have the option of choosing a different career path. In my excitement of discovering all the different programs that are offered in the US, I got a bit carried away and probably romanticized the idea of becoming a great nurse and all that it entails. Now that my "rose colored glasses" are off I can hopefully come up with a better strategy and eventually join the legion of nurses.

    Really, this forum is a hidden gem and I :bow: to the creators and all the veteran RNs, newly grads and nurses-to-be who contribute with their stories and advice!

    Please don't discredit yourself. There's nothing with romanticizing about the idea of you becoming a great nurse! If that's your goal then you should stick to it. If you have a passion for nursing then stick with it. Now reality is that retrogression and the lack of jobs for new grads will put a hold on your plans to stay and work in the US but it doesn't mean that you can't study nursing and have plan B while waiting. Good Luck

    I think the key is to get into a job that you will love and if nursing is that key then go for it however be realistic in what is going on and that you may have to consider either returning home once you have completed your training whilst waiting for a visa allowing you to stay and work in the US or look at another country. The end goal may be reachable just may take time

    You can get a second OPT, if you go back to your home country and enter US with a new I-20 from new school.
