Hi to All!

I'm writing to see if anyone has gone thru my experience... I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from another country. I've been working here in the UNited States for the past 5 years in the Marketing Field but Am now thinking of getting into the Medical Field - Nursing. My question is : Was it a difficult transition? What were your hold backs? Should I try and be an LPN first before actually going to RN? Also with that much years away from school training will it be really difficult to go back to school?

Hope you guys don't mind my questions... Thanks!

I am also from a foreign country and when I first started college in the US they made me start from SCRATCH.....I had to get a GED and take it from there. I received no credit for anything from my past. Talk about feelings of disappointment, devestation and discouragement on my part!!!!! I had an "alien card" and sure felt like one :lol2: It probably depends which country you are from and times may have changed things. I am talking about the 1980's/ 90's.

I am entering an RN program this fall....after lots of "catching" up (also got my citizenship in 1991). I am super excited and happy to start. Time heals all wounds ?!?! LOL

Hello...

I know women ( at least 2) who never went to high school here, their feet never touched campus floors, their english totally sucked and now they finished nursing program, one with Honors, one with a little baby ( got pregnant and had the baby, during the the nursing schools) If they are nurses now you can also become a nurse, good luck to you.

Thanks for your support and reply! I really appreciate it!

Thanks to both your responses!

Specializes in OR.

I came to the US in 2003 with a bachelor degree ( Enviromental Sciences) from another country. I did not have any medical background. I had to validate my degree through "World Education" and take some prereq for a year. I graduated from an accelerated nursing program last december.

I think it depends on the degree you already hold. In my school it says your degree must be "equivalent to a baccalaureate degree issued by the university, as determined by a professional credit evaluation agency". I believe that is WES.org or ECE.org. I think there are also TOEFL requirements.

Good luck, & don't give up!!

Suree,

I came into US with a BA in teaching, took a year of pre-reqs and now on my way to the Nursing school in the fall. It seems that there are a lot of people that are doing it. Things that will make it easier - do the prereq'sits first if possible; get your English up to speed, if needed; take care of your status, if it's an issue.

Good luck
