2nd degree BSN vs. MSN?

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi All,

I'm currently looking to switch into the nursing field from a non-related field (accounting) as I no longer (nor ever) found myself enthralled by the world of accounting. Any input or advice from those who have done a similar transition into nursing from a non-related field would be really helpful. I'm also looking at the various programs in the Bay Area and am looking to get input from anyone that has gone through the programs. Below are the ones I'm looking at:

- USF - BSN (2nd degree)

- USF - MSN Clinical Nurse Leader

- UCSF - Masters Entry Program

- SF State - MSN

- Samuel Merritt - Entry Level MSN

- Samuel Merritt - Accelerated BSN

- Sonoma State - Direct Entry MSN

Any input on any of these programs would be helpful - related to admissions, the actual school itself, classes, clinicals, tuition, timeline, pre-reqs (at community college vs. online), etc. I've researched as much as I could based on each school's website and have talked to a few counselors, but obviously nothing can take the place of actually have personal experience going through one of the programs.

In addition, I'm weighing the benefits between getting a BSN vs. a MSN. I double majored in undergrad in Business (Accounting) and Sociology. Any input would be helpful on the differences between the jobs you can get with the different degrees, as well as any personal experience or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

haha i just graduated for Mgmt Law and i will be starting nursing next year.... so dont feel left out ;p

Everybody is switching careers now, my friend is leaving nursing for accounting! She's been a nurse for 5 yrs. Good luck!

Hi Amy,

It is good to know that I'm not the only one out here with the same situation. I graduated just last year with a B.S. in Health Sciences, it is basically the major that prepares you for all pre-health and research careers. I wasn't planning on getting a 2nd Bachelor's degree because I feel that it wouldn't be a good way to spend my money and time since I already have a Bachelor's degree. So, I'm actually looking into associate degree in nursing (ADN) and entry-level MSN programs. I'm really quite at lost right now since both types of programs are extremely competitive and difficult to get in. I'm planning to just apply to both programs in the Bay Area (community colleges as well as the same schools you mentioned) just to see which one I get into first.

I see that it has been a while since that post. Have you decided on something yet? Have you applied? Please let me know which one you chose and why. It would be nice to hear from someone in the same situation as me.
