NCLEX Tips and Experience

Published

We just want to share our experience before we took the NCLEX-RN exam. Me and my wife took the exam last April 2, 2014. It was brain draining especially the SATA's yet through God's mighty power, grace and mercy....we successfully passed the exam first take. Just self review and we prepare for 3 months...the month of February and March were the most intensive where we answer almost 100 questions per night.

It seems that the biggest problem that a test taker would face will be his/her anxiety. We know that mild anxiety is ok but others went passed tru the line and became severe and so they panicked and the train of thoughts were derailed due to the misfirings of the neurons. We are so very grateful that we surpassed that situation and so on the day of the exam..we have overcomed our nervousness. In fact, 1 week before exam..we feel that we are ready to take it. Here's why.....

.....First, we have to have FAITH that we will pass the exam...as we are reading and memorizing bible text, God assured as that we will pass this exam...it really requires faith because when we are doing our test exams, we only got 60 - 64% and some are lower than that..it is really really disappointing yet our firm belief that there is a living God who gives wisdom and knowledge to those people that seek Him..it will be given. This are the Bible text that we can share to you to meditate with: (to add we woke up 3AM to pray)

Jeremiah 33:3

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

James 1:5

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to allmen liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him

Jeremiah 29:11-13

11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare[a] and not for evil,to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me,and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Isaiah 65:24

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

......We used 3 books, Saunders 5th edition...what we did is that we answer most of the questions in the CD almost 4400 questions. Master the SATA's it's 199 questions...to familiarize with the questions and read rationales too, it's very helpful. SATA in SAUNDERS is much harder than the exam itself. Also the PDA of La Charity and A good Thinking Approach to the NCLEX and other Nursing exam by Susan Poorman et., al..this book was very very helpful too because most of the questions were very difficult. It will develop your critical thinking skills and a deep analysis of the questions. I also go to you tube because there are some helpful tips on how to answer the exam. Just giving you some few tips.

1. Rephrase the question in your own Word

2. Use the process of Elimination

3. Ask yourself what is the question asking you

4. Use the Maslow, ABC and Nursing process(know this by heart)

Read and remember the Test taking strategy in Saunders book.....

So basically, I finished the 265 questions, I am hoping that I will finish it early but it wasn't. But my wife finished it in 81 questions. I think I have 40-50 SATA's, 5-10 drag and drop, 1 drug calculation... but majority are prioritization. Read the questions carefully and analyze if it is a positive or negative query then choose the answer. Everytime I submit the answer, I prayed that God will blessed it. Also be familiar with the normal values especially electrolytes. I know every individual has different experiences/questions yet still go back to the basics. Just have FAITH and believe in your self. It is not easy, have a discipline in studying.

After the exam, we tried the PVT and it worked, it gave us the good pop up, after 24 hours we checked our result in OHBON and the result was there, we didn't pay for the PV quick results.

Goodluck to each and everyone of you...We hope this help...
