NCLEX review book all through school?

Published

I remember back when I first joined (geez, that was so long ago...2 months) that someone mentioned having a NCLEX review book all through school and that they referred to it a lot. Would you recommend purchasing one to use as a reference tool throughout school? (after orientation today, I'll have a ton more questions, I'm sure! LOL!)

TIA....

I've read that here too. I (and this is my opinion only) would not recommend it this early in the game. I think back to when I was in school and feel I would have been overwhelmed with an NCLEX book in the first year of school thinking I would never be able to get it all.

Programs have a progression of information that is set out as it is to teach the basics and build on it, just like one builds a house. I would think jumping ahead to more difficult information could muddy the waters of the mind of a new student. There is soooooo much to learn and it should be done systematically so that it is logical and has a basis in knowledge. But as I said, it's only my opinion.

And, if I waited until at least my second year, it would be an updated book as well, right? Hmmmm...something to ponder! I did get a "key nursing skills" book and it is simple to follow and probably just the basics of what I am going to learn the first few days of class.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I think I am going to head over to the OR forum soon to ask some questions so I'll see you there (I'm rethinking CNM).

When I was in school, i did purchase a couple different nclex books/cd's. the one i like best was mosbeys and also the suanders cd as they broke it down into sections such as neur, skin, mental health etc so i could study off of what was relevant for that time in school. For me personally they were a great addition to studying my class notes, books. It turned out that my instructor was using questions from these books as well. (not that she would tell anyone beforehand) But the questions were word for word.

If you do use Nclex books/cds just be sure to use your class outlines/notes as well and only study what you are working on at that point in time otherwise you may end up lost.

Best of Luck..

i'll be browsing mine throughout school. Its been recommended to me several times.

I have the Saunder's Comprehensive Review for NCLEX-RN 2nd edition. It breaks the subject matter down into separate chapters and then outlines the important content. It wouldn't have been much help in Fundamentals of Nursing but it really helped me in Maternal Child/Pediatric Nursing. I used the NCLEX book as well as notes to study for each test. It has practice questions at the end of each chapter and gives the rationale for each answer. It also came with a CD of questions.

I used one to study for the tests in school as I went along, and it WORKED! So yes I do recommend studying an NCLEX book all thru nursing school. When I finished, I just studied the areas I had not been reviewing in a long time.........like OB and PSYCH. And I got straight A's on my tests, managed to test for my NCLEX less than 3 weeks from graduation and passed, so I guess it worked for me! :)

Deb...what version of NCLEX review would you recommend? I'm assuming they'll be coming out with a ton of new ones due to the new testing, or don't you guys think so since I am sure the concept is the same?
