missundertall I am an international nurse as well I don't have a ssn either, I did everything through the texas bon. They don't require a ssn, and you have options to do it with cgfns or eres, I chose eres since they are really fast, but you do need to do a toefl exam if your classes where in another language other than english.
thank you carrot cake..wat is eres by the way..

Try a ITIN number, that is the loop hole Illegal Aliens use in USA to furnish a Social Security number. It is a 9 digit number (Same As SS #) and first number always starts with a 9.
IRS will give you a ITIN number

Have to show a good reason as to why the ITIN number is to be given, few members posted a while back that because they could not show proof of reason for on to be given one was not given. Ties usually something like permission to live but not work in the US due to spouse having H1b
missundertall the ERES is the educatoinal records evaluation service... I did my records through them rather than using cgfns, ERES doesn't take much time to get the job done. The TX bon let's you decide which credential evaluation service you want to use. Go the the TX bon website and check the requirements for them. In simple words you need: Application for tx bon, Toefl ibt (score higher than 83), your credentials evaluated (ERES or CGFNs), criminal background check (finger prints), nursing jurisprudence exam, register with pearson view. After I submitted my application to the tx bon they gave me a temporary ssn and it starts with 9, I don't know if that is coincidence or if that is PinayUSA is talking about, that ssn is needed for when you go in to do the finger prints. Hope it helps:)

That's true the ITIN numbers starts with the number "9" and just like a valid working SS# and follows the same format of the real true SS#, but it's not the type of number that should be used for obtaining a professional license.
A couple of other differences is that in the 4th or fifth digit position are the numbers "7, 8 or 9", giving this number away that it's not a true SS# valid to apply for a job or for licensing purposes.
The other difference is that if you're asked (most likely) from a medical facility (hospital, LTC, etc), HR and or payroll needs a copy of the SS# CARD and not laminated.
Why, because the ITIN information is on letter form only, not on a card.
Yes, the illegals use the ITIN as but it also used for filing federal taxes as well, just not able to be used the correct and proper use of it and it puts the employer as risk if they hire such persons with such a number. If an employer (such as hospital's payroll dept.), they will usually use the E-verify computer system and will quickly see the given SS# is valid or invalid.
Submitting such numbers as the ITIN (for a valid SS#) on a nursing application is not only subject to the employee being fired but also the nursing application can be used against one's license for submitting false information and the nursing license can be revoked or suspended for a specific time unless one can give them a valid work authorized SS#.
Her reason would be she is has never been to USA. OP is from Philippines she can only supply a ITIN number.
If you are talking about people living in USA who want to supply a ITIN, then you can always site Freedom Of Religion for not wanting to give out a Social Security Number.
But she has to show a reason as to why a ITIN number is issued and just stating never been to the US may not swing it and they give her one. The last I heard the government was clamping down on these numbers being issued. It is a risk asking for it but their decision to whether the risk is worth it
An ITIN is a nine-digit number issued by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are required for U.S. tax purposes to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have and are not eligible to get a social security number (SSN).

I am well aware of what a ITIN number is, and I am also well aware of how many people in USA here Illegally using it to get around immigration law and working laws. They call then I9 workers in my area (Texas), I call the Illegal Aliens.
I saw Maryland BON is allowing applicants with SS# or Fed. Tax Number to process an application , I don't know if they need a Social Security number only to issue licenses. Texas will allow applicants to sit for NCLEX without SS#, but will not issue a Licenses without a Social Security Number.
Right now ITIN are being abused by Illegal Aliens in USA, but so is the school system, the welfare, hospitals, etc
I for one personally think if someone comes here on a valid work Visa, They should work their contract and have to go back home, or if they want to stay in USA and become a Legal Residence then they should pay some type of fee like $25,000 for themselves and then pay the same for spouse and/or each kid......
Since this is a nursing forum,, I think US BON's should allow initial application without Social Security Number, but will not Issue Licenses until a Valid Social Security number is given. And do not allow Endorsements without Social Security Number.
