Nausea and Vomiting from Nights?

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Hey Y'all! I am a graduate nurse and have been working for about 6 months now. 3 weeks ago I switched to nights, and had absolutely no problem flipping my sleep schedule. I am, however, having uncontrolled nausea.

It started out as lack of appetite and nausea, and has gotten so bad to where I can only tolerate sips of water, or I will puke. I will wake up with a completely empty stomach, and vomit stomach acid. Every now and then I will hit a golden hour around midnight where I can tolerate crackers or bland, soft food, but not much and I am still left feeling terribly nauseous.

I am starting to get concerned (and very miserable) because in the last 3 weeks I have lost over 10lbs and am starting to experience fatigue, generalized weakness, and heart palpitations with activity. My coworkers tell me to eat small, frequent meals but the nausea is so out of control I can hardly eat anything without immediately throwing up.

I am a normally very healthy 23 year old female with no medical history or food allergies, and I cook all of my own meals (I tend to eat a mostly paleo diet). The only medication I am on is birth control (the pill) and I am not pregnant.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before?

Sounds like you need to see your health care provider.

yep! nights were a killer for me until i forced myself to lift weights and/or run to get better sleep on my off days and also saw my PCP requesting a script for Zofran.

I have recurring issues with cyclical vomiting. It's usually worse when I am under stress. almost always starts in the early am and can last up to three days. I find that a small meal before bedtime works. Plus making sure I get a minimum of 4 hours uninterrupted rest. I also am the zophran queen. I had 18 inches of my colon removed in 2012 and my gastro-entomologist calls what I have abdominal migraines.
