NAU's BSN application deadline

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

i've asked before if anyone was applying to northern arizona universities' accelerated bsn program, and didn't really get a response. so i don't expect much now, but today is the application deadline and i wanted to see who will be anxiously waiting for their letter, like me?!?!?!

i wonder how long it will take for them to make their decisions, and when the letters will be mailed. good luck to anyone else out there! :yeah:

I got a 95.6 on my HESI and my pre-req GPA was a 3.84. I had A's in Micro and AnP 1&2. Those are the pre-reqs they weigh heavily. I'm liking the program so far. It has it's minor problems, but so does every school. They treat the accelerated students with a lot of respect, as they know we are all educated and many of us are older. Not saying they treat the traditional students any worse...I just know that I'm being treated well. The accelerated program has 30 students in it. We have lost 2 so far, so we're now down to 28. Good luck!!!

Are you done with all prerequisites? Where do u currently live, if u don't mind me asking.

Its getting so close, anyone else checking the mail with excitement everyday?! I really want to find out before first weekend of march since I will be visiting Phoenix that weekend and would love to know so I could plan a day trip up to flagstaff if I have time.

Ok real question - How much is the tuition? I'm a bit nervous about nau's website not being very helpful and all. few other schools are much more forthcoming with information and details. I even called the school and got a vague " check this part of website" as answer... so how much does it cost to attend the accelerated program?!

and is this 12 month program for real or a rumor since it is not on the website...

Dkittle - was that question directed to me? If so, Im in california. SF bay area and am 24 years old, previously graduated with a ba in dec 08

good luck everyone. 60 applicants and 30 spots isnt THaaaat bad, right??

Hey Katsie,

Haha! Yes, it's a real program....I really think we will receive letters this week. I know this was the week that the letters went out last year, according to posts. The info is on the website about the program....I understand that they are not letting anyone know their status until the letters. I think they want to be sure there is a final list before giving accidental false info. I tried getting info too and pretty much I have to wait just like everyone else. I I really need to know too. It's frustrating having to wait. I'm a planner and need to get things going, but having to hold off due to this stinking letter!!!! The tuition cost is under financial aid..I think. For out of state, it will be freaking expensive (about 8,000) as for in state residents it's about 3,000 to 3,500 per semester for a full load. I understand that those that get in will get an award for a scholarship for 10,000. I'm not sure if this is automatic or if we still have to apply for it. I am a little nervous too about the finances. This past year, I stopped teaching full time and currently substitute. My husband does well enough for us both, but we may be moving and will have to sell our house in this economy, which may end up hurting the finances.

I have to find housing myself. I live in Yuma, AZ right now and for the latter part of the program I can live here, if we don't move before then. Otherwise, I have to live up there in Flagstaff. It will be a little of a hardship being away from my husband and dogs, but I am willing to sacrifice and get this done. If you are looking for housing, my suggestion would be to live in Flagstaff. I looked up all the clinical sites and Flagstaff is at the center of the hub. I thought of living in Phoenix as well, but it's not as convenient. I was considering the 24 and up campus housing, but I'm so used to living in a house with space that I can't go back to apartment living. I'm trying to get my sister to relocate and share a house with me. If we are both chosen, I'm possibly interested in sharing a place. I, like you, am older (thirties) and tame.

I'm surprised that there is hardly anyone that even participated in this post? It seems that more people in the past participated? hmm... well maybe that's a good thing since they only pick 30. Let's keep one another posted on the letter status and let me know how the housing situation is on your trip. Good luck to us!!! :nurse:

OOOps Katsie! I misread your post about the length of the program and not the program itself. I was told by a nursing adviser that they were going to present to the board(?) to make the decision to shorten the program because many other accelerated programs are a year in length and it can be done. He said that he thinks that it will pass this year or next year. He is right though about the programs being shorter in other places. I, myself, am tempted to postpone and go with a shorter program in Georgia. It makes it especially easy to consider because of this waiting game!!! That's one of the places that we may move. It kills me though, because I feel like I worked so hard just to apply to this program and my heart has been set on it for years now. The pass rate on the NCLEX is high also. NAU is a great school! I have been pleased with the education I have received thus far. I got my undergrad there and I'm almost done with my Masters.:)

Katsie BTW do you know for sure that there was 60 applicants?

Dkittle- no I do not know for sure that there were 60 applicants, I read that on a post above. Well I called and spoke to someone today but all of their advisors are not answering as they have had tons of calls. the lady I spoke with was surprisingly UNhelpful, I mean, how can you work in department of nursing and not know some of the easy questions i asked... its kind of a turn off to me especially since I just was accepted to another school and they have been sooo helpful and I can always speak to a real person. Well, I guess we will find out next week.

If I do get in and decide on that school I will be living in Flagstaff. My bf lives in Phoenix right now but I think its better to be focused on school, right : ) Ive never been to flagstaff and my trip next week is only my second weekend in arizona ever, so Im trying to figure if its right for me but it sounds great!

8,000 for a semester and theres only 3 semesters? ummm THATS CHEAP compared to the other programs Ive checked out. If that is the case that is a huge plus for NAU. the one im looking at now is at least 40k.

let me know when you get a letter ! fingers crossed.

Wow, I'm not surprised that they get bombarded with calls, but they could at least be helpful. Yeah, I guess compared to other schools and IF the program does only take a year then the 8,000 is not bad. My perspective is from what a residents pays compared to non. Regardless, I don't care if it's 20,000 a semester at this point! I just want to get in and out and start working!!!

I have been to the main campus in Flagstaff once. It's a small town, but has some beautiful mountain views. The summer will be soo nice.

Okay, I will keep updated on letter and you let me know too!

Dkittle - I got my acceptance this weekend !! Very excited, I was in phoenix this weekend and hoping to drive to flagstaff for day on sunday but the weather did not agree with my bf's 2 wheel drive car. I spoke with ---- today who was helpful in answering some questions but I would love to get some NAU alumni advice as well !

yelnikmcwawa - Hi ! I was wondering if you had any insight into the accelerated program for potential students. The program is now only 12 months which I love but I was wondering how prepared you felt for a career in nursing after attending the accel program at nau ? My main concern is the travel to the clinicals - what does that entail ? I am not sure if they mean you are living somewhere for the week while doing rotations at the hospital or if its more of a day trip to various places. In general, how often do you travel? for how long? distance? do you feel that the distant clinical sites are helpful for your experience? are you staying in motels often, I am just not sure how it works and would love anyones help. thanks so much

Congrats Katsie and Soccer Girl!

I talked with ---- also and I was not so lucky :( My HESI score killed my chance of getting in. I made a 81 and the average was an 88. Everything else was great. I know I should have studied and I admit I'm horrible at math and bombed that and the chem portion. I did not even realize until the end that there was access to a calculator. I understand that they are looking at it from a nursing perspective that I could mess up on the medication administration, even though I took medical calculations twice and scored a perfect 100 both times.

Anyhow, I just applied to the traditional program which is here in Yuma where I live! Because I'm a NAU graduate, it will actually take me the same amount of time as the initial accelerated program ( 5 semesters)!!! So duh, I never realized this and it will work better for me because I will not have to relocate to Flagstaff. I even get to take another HESI because this is a different application/program. Believe me ....I'm studying NOW!!!

I'm glad to hear that you all made it and please I am fine about not getting in (things work out for a reason). I do wish that it would only be the one year, but maybe I need the EXTRA semester since I'm a little special :)

Good luck to you and we may be in some classes or at least see one another when you have Yuma clinicals :) Keep in touch!
