Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hey guys! Kind of surprised nobody has started a thread for the Fall 2018 application cycle. Comment which cohort you're applying to! I am applying to Yuma as my first choice! I'm really praying that I get in! Anyone else trying for Yuma?? Best of luck to everyone!

Hello, I have been lurking through older comments for advise and guidance to help during the application process. I plan to apply for the Fall 2018, also in Yuma. I still have yet to take the Kaplan exam. Trying not to get too discouraged due to the fact that one of my in progress courses is A&P II. Have you completed the Kaplan exam?

Hey, Lizeth! I'm happy to hear that someone else is trying for Yuma! Hopefully we will get in together! Yes I have already taken my Kaplan. I didn't do too well on the science and writing portions and it brought my overall score down pretty low. I met the minimum requirements basically. My advice is to spend a lot of time studying A&P II . That is all the science portion is on. Since you haven't completed the class yet I would recommend using outside resources to guide you. I used khan academy videos on YouTube to help me study. The thing that really tripped me up on the science portion is that there are two correct answers for most questions ( my advisor told me they do this on purpose because as nurses we are going to need to be able to use our best guess in critical situations). So make sure you narrow down the two correct choices and make your best inference. Make sure you know the processes of the respiratory, cardiovascular, immune and gastrointestinal systems. There are also questions on neurology, endocrine system, hematological system, and the renal system. Make sure you know how homeostasis works and electrolyte balance. This quizlet I found has some pretty good practice questions NAU KAPLAN Flashcards | Quizlet

As for the writing I would invest in an SAT writing prep book. This is something I didn't do but I wish I did. I got a 50% in writing and I consider myself a good writer. I will admit I didn't study at all for writing or reading because they are my strongest subjects but I definitely regret not studying for the writing. Reading was simple, I got a 90% on it without really studying. Math was really easy, I got an 89% on it and I would consider math as one of my worst subjects. It was mostly like adding/subtracting fractions, changing decimals, ratios, word problems, etc. To study for the math portion I went online and found some fraction/ decimal work sheets and printed them and did a few every day. I also looked up videos on how to calculate dosage because I had heard there were some dosage questions on the test, there was only 1 question on it on my test but I would still recommend watching videos on how to do it since it's useful information. Overall I was pretty disappointed in my Kaplan score as it meets the minimum requirement. I really hope it doesn't hurt me too bad in the application process but if I don't get in this round I will try again and hopefully be more prepared on my weaker sections. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. I took my Kaplan a few weeks ago so it's still pretty fresh in my mind!

Thank you so much for the advice! I am hoping to take the exam for this application cycle and if the results are not satisfactory, at least I will have my feel for the exams layout and can study better for the next application cycle. My only concern is my pre-requisite GPA being 3.47, so I feel I need complementary high Kaplan scores to make me more eligible.

I totally feel ya, I have a pretty low GPA of 3.3 as well so I'm really not getting my hopes up. I'm working on rebuilding my GPA but it's taking some time lol. But I figured why not at least try to get in this time.

I feel with a 3.3 GPA and passing Kaplan scores you have a pretty good chance. Did you take your pre-requisites at Arizona Western College?

No, I took my Pre-reqs through the NAU flagstaff campus. I will have to relocate to Yuma if I get accepted. What about you?

Yes I live here in Yuma, so this semester I will finish my pre-requisites at AWC, which include A&P II and Micro.

Hey guys! I will be applying to the Flagstaff Campus! Currently have a 3.9 GPA with an 85% overall on the Kaplan! Who else will be applying to the Flagstaff campus? If not, which campus? Feel free to share your stats in order to compare!

Hi all! I am applying for fall 2018 as well (2nd time) for both the Flagstaff and Tucson campuses. I was an alternate for both campuses last application cycle. Now that I've taken it once I know that I should focus a little more on science, they weigh this heavily!

Good luck everyone! Hoping for the best for all of us.

Hi there! When will you be retaking the Kaplan exam?

Yes I will! I felt I had a competitive application last time (89% overall +4.0 GPA) but unfortunately my science score held me back (70%). But there are many applicants accepted with lower overall grades because they see the science as the most important subscore so fear not! I was told that one more question correct in the science probably would have gotten me accepted. Frustrating but at least I know for this time! I haven't retaken it yet.
