Hello to everyone that is applying for Cohort 58 ABSN program at the San Diego location for National University. This is going to be my first time to apply. Getting more nervous as the October Application date approaches. I feel confident in my scores for the TEAS test and my current GPA from the core sciences required, but this essay is starting to make my stomach spin. I've met with a writing advisor at Spectrum Writing Center, so I feel prepared in what to expect to be successful in writing this proctored essay, but will it be enough?
I've spoken with one other that has applied to Cohort 58 as well. Wondering if there is anyone else out there on this same journey feeling the same way I am.
I am excited to hear from anyone attempting to apply for this Cohort!
How did you do scoring wise in all the areas? How did you prepare for the teas? I've always been pretty bad at standardized testing. This girl I took anatomy with walked in and got a 90 (she's taken it 3 times before and never studied) She said the stuff I'm studying is way to advanced and that ATI made their study guide way too intense. Idk though...I'm studying a 1-6 hours everyday since I'm not working that much and feel like I'm relearning everything and feel so stupid about not remembering all the rules. SO MANY MATH RULES. I had the highest grade in anatomy and physiology recently so I feel decent about the science. Def feel like I make some pretty stupid mistakes on the practice tests but that makes me focus on reading the entire question and not jumping to conclusions. As you can see I'm freaking out hahah!
Well for me personally I studied the mometrix TEAS app, and the TEAS secrets. Definitely study a&p and rules in english. That's what I had the biggest issue with. I dont remember my gpa tbh but I believe that I had 33 point some odd points, my essay was 4.5/5 and I got an 82.7 on the teas.
Hello!
I've been lurking around this website for a while and I've been accepted into cohort 57!! I don't know if this is weird for me to be on your guys' forum, but for the past year I have been on this also looking for answers and feeling anxious about the application process. I thought I would reach out through this to be of some help for you all - purely because I enjoy helping people through tutoring/teaching.
Some answers:
-Cohort 57's cutoff score was 85.47 (not sure about alternate cutoff).
-Do not underestimate the essay - it ends up being a huge game-changer for some.
-From my experience, once you've taken the TEAS three times, you have most likely been exposed to every possible question that it would ask.
A little about my experience:
-I have applied once before (to cohort 56 which had the highest cutoff they've seen) and was denied the first time
-I've taken the TEAS a total of 4 times
-My scores:
Cohort 56
GPA: 3.533
TEAS: 84.7
ESSAY: 3/5
Overall: 81.21
Cohort 57
GPA: 3.533
TEAS: 92.7
ESSAY: 5/5
Overall: 92.41
I have some great advice I'd love to share about the essay - an entire method of approach in fact. I made the mistake of underestimating the essay and maybe even overestimating my writing abilities and knowledge of the TEAS subjects (if I'm being honest). I'm going to try and condense a mini guideline on how to approach the essay. This is based on meeting with six completely different tutors from the writing center...
Again, I would like to reach out purely because I love helping people and I wish that someone who was accepted into the program at the time did something like this when I was struggling! The one thing that will get you in is discipline and determination!

First off, congratulations on acceptance into Cohort 57!
Thank you for reaching out. These next few weeks will be deciding how to approach the essay with a compelling story while answering the essay prompt given. Any help would be great. I'm aiming for a 5/5, but as long as i can be a 3/5 or higher it should be enough given my current TEAS and GPA. I'm having the same anxiety thinking I may be doing the same in overestimating my writing abilities.

Are there any questions you had specifically?
I've taken the TEAS once so I do know what to expect for the most part. The English/Grammar will be my most difficult area so I have been focusing on that. Other than the ATI TEAS prep book, any other online resources for Grammar/Sentence structure that might be most helpful?
Before you did your essay for the second time, did you have an idea of what YOU specifically wanted to write about going into it? I'm focusing on two different instances in my life that made me want to be a nurse. I'm thinking that as long as I answer the prompt question and give a good description of my passion for nursing, I should be alright. Trying to not sound generic such as "This is my calling".
I also hear many don't properly finish. Either they didn't have enough time to go back and edit, or they just didn't have enough time to finish at all. I'm very fast in typing my thoughts when writing, so i don't think not finishing will be an issue. Hoping to give myself enough time to look about 10-15 minutes on what i wrote to clean it up.
Did you have any time left when doing your essay? If you did about how much time did you have to clean it up? You did something right the second go around! 5/5.
Thank you in advance!
Okay so yes, it's common for people to find the English section the most difficult because all the sections are weighed the same even when that section has significantly less questions. I actually didn't use the ATI prep book at all. I used Mometrix and the TEAS version 6 book by Accepted, Inc. The Accepted, Inc. book was really what got me 100% on the English section because of how concise the material is. It simply gave me the grammar rules and I studied them.
Another great tool for the TEAS was the TEAS Mastery app. For me personally, I struggle with test-taking itself. Not a lot of people realize that low scores are not always because of knowledge gaps. Anyway after studying the concrete material in each subject, I would pull out my phone and answer 30 questions while really paying attention to the explanations. The great thing about the app is that it organizes questions into specific categories, so that you are able to identify which part of the English section you find difficult. After exhausting the questions in that particular category in the app, I would try the practice questions in the back of the books I have. I would seriously just beat the subject to death lol.

These were pulled from a previous post. I have gone to the writing center as well and he gave me these same ones. What we focused on in the meeting was to describe nursing as an art, and nursing as a science. All of them are fair game. Just write about why you want to be a nurse and make sure your thesis answers the prompt given. Ready to get that date for the essay. I'm very impatient at the moment. I've been watching the last cohort go through this process.
* Compare and contrast nursing as a science and as an art.
*Describe a time you had to use interpersonal communication to work through a difficult work situation.
*What are your strengths and weaknesses?
*The nursing program is very rigorous, what would you do to ensure your success?
*Why do you want to be a nurse?
*What skills or attributes set you apart from the rest, and how will these help you while in nursing school or in your nursing career.
