:nurse:Anyone out there applied to NU nursing program San Diego cohort 51 ?
I'm an alternate as well. Do you know how deferring to next cohort works? Will us be in alternate pool again, or automatically guaranteed to enroll? If we have to compete with new applicants, are we allowed to re-take TEAS and essay?
I'm not sure of the process, but i think we do not need to retake TEAS/essay... i'm pretty sure we are guaranteed a spot for next cohort without any further examination
in THAT email they sent it stated-alternates "further instructions after April 21,2017" soooo i'm just hoping to get some news this week!!!
Hello All! I am from Cohort 50! I know how much it sucks to wait. They told us we would know before Christmas and then didn't tell us until mid January. It was so stressful! If you got into Cohort 51 or are an alternate congratulations! If you didn't get in this round, keep trying and don't give up on your dream! I am just finishing up my first class (final's tomorrow) and stumbled upon this post (looking for Cohort 51's orientation day). Anyways, wish you all the best!
Hello there,
While I am not sure if we can share prompts, I would like to tell you what I did to prepare and I did fine. First I picked a prompt, "Why is nursing important and why do you want to be one?" Then I wrote out my response (untimed). I did this over a the course of a few days and really put my brain into it. Then I got a second prompt from my brother. This one asked about a significant person in your life that helped shape who you are today. I did this one timed. I turned both into my brother and had him give me feedback. Now, I know not everyone has access to a cool brother that has a masters in English, but you can reach out to the English dept at National for help. Or you can take these pointers:
1) It should only be 5 paragraphs; an intro, 3 points of support, and a conclusion.
2) It probably won't take you a full hour to write, so don't freak if you get done early. I wrote mine on test day in 20 minutes. Then I reread it a few times, then submitted. Also, don't freak if your taking your time. Everyone writes at a different pace.
3) Don't elaborate on something that will bring questions into the essay that you do not have time to go in further detail on. On my sample essays I had to cut the detail about why I hadn't tried to go into nursing sooner (insert crazy nurse-mom stories here). If it adds questions, do include it.
4) Make sure everything meshes together well.
5) Have a good hook. An intro should have a hook that gets the reader interested in what you have to say. In mine I talked about maggots. Definitely got the readers attention and probably a few laughs. Be creative, but also make sure that you can correlate it to the question.
That's my advice. Hope it helps!
Cheers!
I thought I was gonna do terrible on the essay portion but I ended up with a 4.5/5. I just stuck to what the prompt was asking, shared a little bit of my background, and didn't go too much off topic. Just remember to format it like a normal essay. Intro, three body paragraphs, and the conclusion. And don't forget the thesis statement. You'll rock it!!
