Nail clippers uggggggh!!!

Published

I work in a max. security prison and was just wondering if anyone could answer how nail clippers are done at other institutions. At out facility inmates are not allowed to have their own clippers as they have abused that privilage; therefore, every weekend we have to take them out to the inmates and it's quite a challenge. Nursing staff feels that our CNA's could be used in a far more resourceful manner. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

nnail clippers have the potential to be dangereous in the wrong hands

maybe be timeconsuming but may be the safest path

Just from an infection control standpoint, I am repulsed. But then I think about what the A$$holes could do if they were allowed to have their own nail clippers and allowed to clip their own nails and I immediately feel MUCH better that we are doing it for them. No matter how GROSS!

Yup, gross and nasty. Obviously need to be cleaned well in between inmates.

the alternative is even worse though. No way should they be able to have their own pair.

why can't individuals just be given those cardboard emory boards? wouldn't filing the nails as needed have the same outcome?

I agree that it's gross and the clippers are cleaned in between each use for infection control issues and the obvious other reasons. As far as an emery board goes I don't see that being a safe alternative either as inmates tend to find alternative uses for everything and I can only imagine what they would find to file. What a better way of sharpening a shank?????:smackingf

Max security inmates here get nothing. Nail clippers and emory boards are handed out in one area in the bathroom when the inmate showers and returned before they leave. The inmate is watched doing the clipping as well. The items are them checked for altered status. The shower area is searched for altered status as well before the next inmate is brought in. It is not a medical issue it is totally handled by the correctional officers. They have never had a problem this way. Works for me. No toe jam for me ewwwwwwww:monkeydance:

Where I work they have to put in a sick call slip to request their nails to be cut. They come to medical and they cut their nails. Someone stands there with them while they do it. Then the clippers are put into a locked room where they can be autoclaved.
