I am so glad I found this site! I have been reading the threads on this forum and its so comforting to see that there are so many other nurses out there with many of the same worries as me. I have been getting all the advice that I possibly can. I just passed the nclex-pn about 3 weeks ago and have been offered a job at a LTC facility. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to start my new career but at the same time I have so much anxiey that I cant even think straight. I will be starting orientation very soon and just have to do the routine drug screen before everything will be official, background check already cleared and I know theres nothing to worry about as far as that goes. I dont party at all, don't even drink. My problem is that I have always had somewhat of a phobia of having someone watch me pee! My bladder just shuts off.. am I the only one with this issue? What Im wondering too is do I even need to be worrying about this? Is it normal practice for LTC facilities to require future employees to give a urine sample while they watch? I have no problem giving a sample with a little privacy or even a hair sample or blood... anything but that! I am scared that I wont be able to make my myself go with an audience and that will make me look guilty. Sorry for the long post but if anyone has any input on this subject or can give me some pointers on how to calm my worried nerves over this, please post a response. BTW, we had to do drug screens to get into the nursing program but luckily we were given decent privacy. Thanks for your comments

I had to do a urine drug screen just to start LPN school! Who said anything about watching you pee? The attendant made sure I didnt take anything in the bathroom with me and shut the door.
by the way, i have a nervous bladder too, lol. Dont think I could pee with someone watching.
thanks for the reply. Yeah I had to do a urine drug screen for nursing school too and the attendant didn't watch but I was thinking it might be more strict for employment. Hopefully it will be the same way, that makes me feel a little better. I just need to calm down and be excited about the new job.. right?! Thanks again

No worries! I've never heard of anyone actually having to WATCH you pee for a drug screen. Just make sure you take nothing in with you and don't flush after! Good luck!!
thanks! Im going to take care of it this morning, I hope you're right. I will let yall know how it goes.

I recently had a drug screen after a fall. I was sent into a restroom with an anteroom. There was only a toilet in the restroom. I was told not to flush the commode. The nurse stood in the anteroom. I got the sample, gave it to the nurse, then went back into the restroom, flushed, and washed my hands in the anteroom. No problem.
oh, an anteroom? Is that like a little waiting area thats kinda connected to the bathroom? I guess that makes sense. I think I could handle that.

Any time I've had to give a sample it's been at an occupational health center. You'll most likely have to hang up your coat and purse, empty your pockets, then collect your sample in a private room or stall where the toilet only flushes from outside. They'll test the sample for temperature, and have you initial each container before you get your pocket stuff etc back. The only time I've heard of someone having to observe the collection was in the legal system where staying clean is a condition of probation/parole.
