My situtation..

Published

I need help. I am 19 years old. I am currently a college student at the CSM [College of Southern Maryland]. I've changed my major many times, from general studies ,pre-nursing, and now business administration. My goal for the future is to be a nurse in the newborn nursery and then hopefully work in the NICU. Here's the thing. I don't know if I should go back to the pre-nursing or start the actual nursing program where I can get my RN license. I want to transfer to VCU [Virginia Commonwealth University]. In order for me to to go VCU, I have to live in VA after I'm done at CSM for a year and not go to school during that year living in VA. I'd have to work, work, work. My heart is fully set on becoming a nurse. I personally don't want to do pre-nursing because I'd like to have my RN by the time I'm done here at CSM so that I can work at a hospital when I move to VA. This is the problem: parents. I don't think they would approve of me becoming a nurse because I didn't do so well when I was majoring in pre-nursing. If I do the nursing program, I know what to expect. Classes for the spring are signing up pretty quick. Two of the classes I need, which is Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology, are filling up. There are 10 seats available out of 20. If I bring it up to my parents, I have a high feeling that they won't let me do it. It's my life, not theirs. I'm hoping to compromise to my dad because he is more understanding than my mother that I could pay the tuition myself, which is about $240 or $260 each month of the semester I believe. I just hate knowing how my parents don't really have faith in me doing nursing. Everytime I bring it up, it brings stress and arguments between me and my parents:cry:. I need them to be understanding but I don't think they will.

I need help.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That is sad that your parents don't have faith in your desire to become a nurse. If they are paying the bills then you have to place yourself in thier shoes. If this is waht you really want and they don't back you then pay for your classes and when they see you are doing well maybe then they will understand and help you financially.

Why not major in nursing and tell them you're majoring in something else? Is that possible. I know when I was at my university I changed my major from Political Science to History to Biology to German to Biology and back to History again--which is what I ended up with, with (not surprisingly) a minor in all of the above. My mom never knew one week from the next what I was majoring in. Since my school was three hours away I could have told her Theatre and she would have never known--even with me coming back in our area every weekend (to spend time with my boyfriend) no one even paid attention to what classes I was in or which books I had.

Which nursing pre-reqs have you taken? And what do you mean by doing badly in them? Even if nursing is your dream if you do poorly in your pre-reqs you are not likely going to get into an RN program.

Why not do some volunteering or shadowing? If you truly love it then have a heart to heart with your parents. There is absolutely NO point in getting your B.A./B.S. in a field you are not going to pursue a career in, take it from me. Now I am going back for nursing when I should've done that in the beginning.

What ever you do don't lie, you tell one lie and that leads to another and then you have no clue what you are doing.

Specializes in SNU/SNF/MedSurg, SPCU Ortho/Neuro/Spine.

you are 19, should be able to make your own decisions!

but whatever it is you have a great chance to proove them wrong by doing great in this classes!

you have to decide which career YOU want and not which one they'd approve due to the fact that YOU are gonna have to put up with it for 8 hours a day not them!

plus the fullfilment of making it through the classes, learning what you want is great!

(i can tell that by personal experience)

it is not going to be easy, but if i could take those classes in an acelerated program craming 1 year of classes in 2 months going to school for 30 hours a week plus working 48 hours every week and still pulled an A there is no reason why you couldn't do the same!

and i did it not because of inteligency, being smart or any of that! i did it becouse i wanted to!

it was hard, i even assumed that i cryed! but i got it out of my way with actually an A and loved the class!

Sweetheart, fight for what you truly want. Be completely honest to yourself. Choosing a career will be a great part/role of your future. You're pretty young, take it easy. I waited for more than four years for the nursing program, and I am truly thankful and grateful that I've finally made it in the program. I've been through alot, and I have taken courses that are equivalent to three Associate degrees. I even came to a point where I felt soooo hopeless, but I remembered what my extremely nice advisor told me... She said, "Never give up on things that your heart truly desire." and prayers-- those helped alot. Here I am, taking nursing classes-- finally! :yeah:

Go for it!!! :hpygrp:
