My Goodness

Nursing Students General Students

Published

hey everyone this is my first thread ever here in the student section and it has been very helpful :D i have been accepted to fairleigh dickinson university henry p. becton school of nursing for their 2 year absn program that begins on august 29. i received my acceptance letter back in february (had a moment where i didn't want to go to) and decided to send my money for my intent to enroll back in may. finally, last month i received the orientation packet and was completely overwhelmed. i felt like a weight was thrown at and on me and i haven't even started attending the school yet.

these are the classes i am expected to sign up for during the fall semester

nurs 2003 fundamentals of nursing i

nurs 2005 professional communication skills, individual, family and groups

nurs 2007 pharmacotherapeutics

nurs 2008 health assessment

what should i expect to encouter in the classes? i am most worried about the pharmacotherapeutics

in addition, they want me to spend $70 on a medical terminology certificate (which i consider a waste since i have taken it already) because it's mandatory. not to mention, we have to buy (already found one for $24/year) and do our background check (another $40), but it doesn't end there. i damn near fell out of my chair when i saw how much i had to pay for uniform pants, jacket, shirts, pin and engraving (i work on tight budget literally). slowly but surely everything is adding up and stressing me out and i haven't brought anything

here is a list of what they want me to get (from dove apparel) and i wanted to know if all of this was needed. in the deluxe student nursing kit (which is $45) i get only the following

stethoscope, utility scissors, blood pressure cuff, pen light, and 3 color chart pens

they have also included a hopkins fdu nursing kit order list (some of which of course i can get from the local nursing uniform store)

disposable penlight with pupil guide (package of 6)

taylor pressure hammer

tape measure - 72" fiberglass

sterile gloves (pair) (2 pairs)

clipboard with calculator

tuning fork - 256cps

tote bag

digital thermometer and box of 100 probe covers (not sure if it is for the mouth or ear)

foley cath set 14fr

straight cath set

sterile dressing change (2 pairs)

cleansing enema bag

4" r.e.b ace (single bandage)

sterile barrier (non-fenestrated)

sphygomomanometer

stethoscope, littman classic

water resistant watch (white)

2.5v standard diagnostic set (this one in particular i was not sure what this is and what i could possibly need it for if someone would elaborate please)

based off this list what do you think i should really focus on getting and save for later on? if i buy everything now it could be a waste of money? my mother is willing to pay for some stuff. in the end i will be paying close to $400 for everything (i am including tax with that)

thanks for the feedback

We practice Foleys on the mannequins in the lab.. Aside from a couple of items- we've utilized almost everything on this list in either or assessment labs or our concepts labs preparing for clinical. My school gave us a tote with most of this stuff in it, though.

how did your first semester go?? was pharmecotherapeutics as hard as you expected and didyou really need all of these supplies?????!!!!! i haven't received my orientation package yet. i am coming in as a transfer student from essex county college with a as.

Specializes in Operating Room.

For the record you do not need all those supplies. That is what they sent us in the orientation package. It turns out what I only used so far is the clipboard, stethoscope and that was it. You can go to your local nursing store and get a lot of the supplies you need. What is necessary is the nursing bag I do use that. They give us supplies during lab/clinical. During orientation they told us that we didn't need that whole list. The diagnostic set you definitely do not need whatsoever. Pharm was pharm LOL it is hard work in the end I earned a B. Many other students earned A or A- you should be okay. Just study the slides and be prepared to take a quiz every week, that is how she test and it will help your grade. Don't stress you will be fine

Specializes in Operating Room.

Oh before I forget you will need to have a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, pen light, and clipboardFor studying you will need plenty of index cards

How did you prepare or study for your medical calc exams?? Was medical calc included in the Fundamentals course or pharm??? Math is not my best subject so I just want to be prepared!

Specializes in Operating Room.

They gave us a med calc book and I took this small book and cd rom and studied all weekend it really was not all that bad and after you take the first one you know what to expectJust take your time people fail the first one because they are nervous and make careless mistakes

I have been studying on my ow so far and doing okay.. Is this self study or do they give you some instruction?? I am going to try to master this as much as possible before Aug 27

Specializes in Operating Room.

A lot of nursing school in general is self study. You are lucky if they give you a study guide or tell you what they are going to focus on. For med math its good you are studying on your own that helps. They give you the book in fundamentals 1 and she will tell you what to focus on. Learn your roman numerals, children dosages, iv drip rate, intake and output, household measurements, dilutions, reading labels, etc. It is not as bad as you think just relax and take your timePiece of advice record the lectures, listen to them, and read your book no matter what. Also transcribe the lectures, meaning type up what is said, it really helps especially in pathophysiology and health assessmentGood luck

Great ...Thank you! That was a good heads up!!! Just trying to be ahead of the game a little!

Roman numerals for nursing??? Okay...don't know why but I am def gonna brush up!!

N...I already have my recorder ready to go! Transcribing has always helped me too..Learned that from A & P!! LOL

THANK YOU ..THANK YOU ..THANK YOU!!!
