Hi,
I'm a foreign educated nurse. Been reading this forum for a long time. And as I see many foreign educated nurse are need to pass some additional courses in their countries.
Could you please tell me whether the number of hours I've received during my 2 year education in the local school is enough to apply to California Board of Registered Nursing to be eligible to take NCLES without making up additional hours?
Here's the Breakdown form:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Theoryhours ~~~~~~~~ Lab/clinical hours
Anatomy & physiology ~~~ 157 ~~~ 86
Microbiology ~~~ 36 ~~~ 18
Medical nursing ~~~ 532 ~~~ 960
Surgical nursing ~~~ 113 ~~~ 230
Obstetric nursing ~~~ 41 ~~~ 80
Pediatric nursing ~~~ 111 ~~~ 232
Psychiatric nursing ~~~ 30 ~~~ 74
where are you from. I also completed a 2 years program. I do not remember the hours that I had but am pretty sure you have had enough. Sure you can apply with CA but you can also call them or mail them to make sure you got everithing. I am still waitting for my process to be done but it is different though because I am going thru NY.
The question for you would be which country did you train in? Are you considered a first level RN in your country and able to sit for the local licensing exam in your country? That is a specific requirement for CA before they will grant you permission to test.
Your obstetrics and mental health hours are going to be on the low side as well.
CA has a Board of Registered Nursing and they will review your credentials on an individual basis. It is really hard for anyone to second guess what they will decide. But be aware that if you do not already hold a US passport, they do require the local license first.
Best of luck to you.
